Objectives
Part 1: The Development of Public Health Sciences, 7.5 credits (The Development of Public Health Sciences, 7.5 ECTS) On completion of the part, the student should: - Be able to account for the public health from a population perspective, and the historical development. - Be able to account for differences in health between different groups and their determinants. - Be able to account for global differences in health. - Be familiar with important political goal documents for the Swedish public health policy - Be familiar with methods to measure the occurrence and transmission of diseases in a population. - Be familiar with basic concepts and strategies for health promotion work. - Be familiar with ethical concepts and principles applicable in the primary health care. - Be familiar with the role of health care in the primary health care. Part 2: Philosophy of medical science and ethics, 6.0 credits (Philosophy of medical science and ethics, 6.0 ECTS) The aim of this part is that the student should get an insight into how health care personnel think and act in clinical situations, as well as in research contexts, and where the borders are of how one can and should act/not act. The aim is also that the student should get insights and prerequisites to reflect on the special theory of science of the public health area and ethics in relation to healthcare and medical and epidemiological research. Knowledge On completion of this part, the student should be able to: - Account for basic theories, principles and concepts within the medical theory of science and ethics Skills On completion of this part, the student should be able to: - Identify scientific theoretical, ethical and research-ethical problems and argumentation forms - Carry out a scientific theoretical and ethical analysis of a scientific and ethical and research-ethical problem - In a consistent way argue for and against a course of action Attitude On completion of this part, the student should be able to: - Reflect on one's own values and the values of others - Show an ethical and scientific attitude Part 3: Qualitative methods, 7.5 credits (Qualitative methods, 7.5 ECTS) On completion of the course, student should be able to: - account for central concepts within a qualitative method, at a general level - describe the contents of the research process - account for different methods for data collection and analysis in qualitative studies - account for quality aspects in qualitative studies and apply these in a fieldwork - develop an interview guide and carry out an individual interview and a a focus group interview, respectively - plan and carry out, and in writing and orally report the results of a small field study based on interviews - explain concepts, and describe methods and results, and discuss the contents of scientific articles based on qualitative methods, of relevance to the public health area - reflect around research-ethical aspects in qualitative studies Part 4: Quantitative Methods - Theory and Application, 9.0 credits (Quantitative Methods - Theory and Application, 9.0 ECTS) On completion of this part, the student should be able to - understand central concepts such as validity, reliability and generalizability - carry out appropriate statistical calculations in connection with descriptive and analytical epidemiology - design an epidemiological study to analyse connections between an exposure and a health outcome - describe and analyse a public health problem, with application in the statistical program SPSS - understand and apply methods to make statistical inferences - communicate and critically discuss results of quantitative studies in a brief report
Content
Part 1: The Development of Public Health Sciences, 7.5 credits (The Development of Public Health Sciences, 7.5 ECTS) This part should give an historical overview of public health development in Sweden and the world, and provide an understanding of how the subject public health science has developed up to today. The part should also give an introduction to the different subject areas in public health care science. Part 2: Philosophy of medical science and ethics, 6 credits (Philosophy of medical science and ethics) This part comprises a description of theories how science develops, what to understand by a scientific paradigm, what to understand by a scientific fact, what types of scientific argumentation are to be found in scientific texts, why informed consent is central in clinical research with people, ethical theories, concepts and principles underlying medical research with people and animals and clinical decisions, what to understand by scientific misconduct and why cheating is not allowed. This part is divided in three sub-parts: the first part consists of an intensive part of six days, where lectures are interleaved with group discussions of cases and is completed with a joint discussion - such a subpart takes approximately two hours and during a six-day we period count on managing twelve such subparts. Part two consists of a two-week period where the students will work two by two on an advanced assignment based on own or suggested themes. The last the part consists of a presentation of the own work, critical examination of others' and an examination. Part 3: Qualitative methods, 7.5 credits (Qualitative methods, 7.5 ECTS) The contents and application of the research process. Study design for a qualitative method including sampling principles, data collection (interview methods) and analysis of qualitative data. Practical application, individually and in groups, with a written and oral presentation. Part 4: Quantitative Methods - Theory and Application, 9 credits (Quantitative Methods - Theory and Application, 9 ECTS) Questionnaire methodology; public health indicators, questionnaire planning, sampling methodology, design, sources of error and ethical considerations Basic knowledge of descriptive and analytical epidemiology; measures of disease occurence, standardisation, study design, sources of error in epidemiological studies and ethical considerations in epidemiological studies Basics in descriptive and analytical statistics; types of data, distributions, descriptive statistics, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing/inference Introduction to SPSS; input, processing, description and analysis of data

Teaching methods
Part 1: The Development of Public Health Sciences, 7.5 credits (The Development of Public Health Sciences, 7.5 ECTS) This part is given in the form of a number of lectures and group exercises in the form of PBL part. The essay is examined through a seminar where the students review the essays of one another and get feedback from a supervisor. Part 2: Philosophy of medical science and ethics, 6.0 credits (Philosophy of medical science and ethics, 6.0 ECTS) In this part, both introductory lectures, group discussions of illustrative cases, plenary discussions where teachers summarise, literature studies, own work under supervision, and presentation of own work, are used. Part 3: Qualitative methods, 7.5 credits (Qualitative methods, 7.5 ECTS) This part is of a problem-based nature and consists of lectures, practical exercises in interview methodology, a group work in the form of a field study, a seminar on articles, supervision on the field study, and individual knowledge acquisition via the reading list. Part 4: Quantitative Methods - Theory and Application, 9.0 credits (Quantitative Methods - Theory and Application, 9.0 ECTS) Teaching is given via lectures, group assignments and computer exercises with the statistical program SPSS.
Examination
Part 1: The Development of Public Health Sciences, 7.5 credits (The Development of Public Health Sciences, 7.5 ECTS) A Pass grade in the part requires active participation in PBL exercises, an approved examination and an approved essay. A Pass with distinction in an entire part requires both a Pass with distinction in an examination and a Pass with distinction in a thesis. If the student can not participate in the compulsory parts, an individual additional assignment is required. Part 2: Philosophy of medical science and ethics, 6.0 credits (Philosophy of medical science and ethics, 6.0 ECTS) This part is examined both through a written individual examination, and a written and oral presentation of work carried out in pairs; a critical examination of the work of another group is also included in the examination. For a Pass grade, one should achieve 70% correct answers and for a Pass with distinction, 85% correct answers. A very well carried out report and review of others' work may pick up an examination which is on the verge of qualification. Compulsory attendance in group and plenary discussions. Part 3: Qualitative methods, 7.5 credits (Qualitative methods, 7.5 ECTS) This part is examined on the basis of an oral and written presentation of a small field study based on a problem area relevant to public health science. The examination takes place in the form of a final seminar in which the work is reviewed and commented. Furthermore, the following parts are also compulsory; introduction to content analysis, participation in the part for planning and implementation of a focus group interview, and a seminar on articles based on qualitative method. Any absence from compulsory parts is compensated for by an assignment. In this part, the grades Fail/Pass/Pass with distinction are used. Part 4: Quantitative Methods - Theory and Application, 9.0 credits (Quantitative Methods - Theory and Application, 9.0 ECTS) This part is examined by an individual written examination and written assignments. The written assignments consists i.a. of applying appropriate methods to describe and analyse a public health problem in the statistical program SPSS, and interpret and critically discuss and communicate the results in a brief report. The examination consists in carrying out appropriate statistical calculations in relation to descriptive and analytical epidemiology, and design an appropriate epidemiological study to analyse a public health problem. For the assignments, the grading scale Fail and Pass is used. For the written examination, the grading scale Fail, Pass and Pass with distinction is used . For the whole part, the grading system Fail, Pass and Pass with distinction is used. For a Pass grade in the part, a Pass grade in both the examination parts is required . A Pass with distinction requires, in addition to a Pass in submitted assignments, a Pass with distinction in the written examination. A Fail grade in a subpart, gives a Fail grade in the entire part. A failed assignment may be supplemented, at most, twice during the same semester. A failed examination may be re-examined, at most, twice during the same semester. Course grade For a Pass on whole course, Pass on all parts is required. For Pass with distinction in the whole course, Pass with distinction is required in at least three of its parts.
Transitional provisions
Regulations at transitions (Temporary regulations) This programme syllabus has been tested and revised against the new regulations in the Higher Education Ordinance regarding level, credits, main field of study and degree description. Courses within the program starting after 1 July 2007 are established according to the new regulations. The education meets the new requirements of the Higher Education Ordinance, Annex 2 (degree scheme) for the specified occupation and general degree. The revision concerns students studying according to this programme syllabus, and who in the autumn semester of 2007 begin semester two or higher.
