Research schools

In recent years Karolinska Institutet (KI) has introduced a number of research schools for doctoral students. The research schools for doctoral students have more scheduled learning activities than the traditional doctoral education, and the students are mostly clinicians.

At KI there are several local as well as national research schools and one international research schools. The research schools are different in many ways, for example regarding the size of the course package.

Local research schools
General practice and primary care (KI-SLL) The overall aim of the research school is for the students to acquire a deeper scientific, critical, analytical and research ethics approach in order to be able to conduct research in the fields that are important to primary care and its patients.
Epidemiology (KI-SLL) The aim of the research school is to provide more advanced training in quantitative research methods for clinically active individuals with an interest in research.
Psychiatry (KI-SLL) he aim of the research school is to teach current knowledge of psychopathogenic mechanisms and to provide more advanced training in research methods, with an emphasis on quantitative methodology, in the field of psychiatry for clinical active doctoral students within the field.
Molecular medicine (KI-SLL) SThe aim of the research school is to provide more advanced training in clinical research methods, with an emphasis on translational experimental research, for clinically active individuals with an interest in research.
KI SÖS research school for clinicians
Health Care Sciences Aims to develop health care sciences by strengthening scientific research of high quality in close relation to health care.
National research schools
National clinical research school in chronic inflammatory diseases The research school will give the enrolled students the necessary tools to develop means for prevention of chronic inflammatory diseases and new treatment options for patients and implement obtained scientific knowledge in a clinical setting.
NatiOn - National research school in clinical and translational cancer research The research school’s aim is to offer a tailor-made course package as a knowledge base for future researchers within the cancer area. The school covers molecular oncology mostly, but also research methods for future clinical cancer researchers.
Swedish interdisciplinary graduate school in register-based research (SINGS) The aim is to stimulate interdisciplinary research and provide a deeper knowledge and understanding of how register data can and should be used in research.
National doctoral programme in infections and antibiotics The aim of the programme is to strengthen the national recruitment base and quality for promoting research on infectious diseases and other risks to health. A particularly important objective is to strengthen domestic and international networking in the subject area.
Swedish National Graduate School for Competitive Science on Ageing and Health (SWEAH) The overarching long-term goal is to develop and strengthen the recruitment base of future leaders in research on ageing and health by creating a sustainable multi- and cross-disciplinary national research school for competitive science, which will ultimately lead to improved quality of life, health, medical treatment, and care for the ageing population.
International research schools
Research school within Synaptic Dysfunction in Alzheimer Disease (SyDAD) The aim of the research school is to train a new generation of researchers with an innovative and translational mind-set, and through a collaborative research programme, elucidate how the different pathways underlying synaptic dysfunction in Alzheimer Disease relate to each other.
School of Health Innovation The aim of this course is to equip the healthcare and life science researchers with tools and knowledge to innovate services for patients, create new companies with their research ideas, or bring their research ideas and talent into existing companies.
Completed research schools
Graduate School for Hearing Disabilities in working life( (på engelska) The main goal of the Graduate School for Hearing Disabilities in Working Life was to develop a scientific basis for high quality research in the area of hearing disabilities in working life.
Swedish Research School for Global Health The aim was to achieve multi-disciplinary collaboration in education, research and training by coordinating existing courses and seminars in global health and develop new courses to fill gaps in knowledge and improve quality of research training. The aim was also to increase participation of the collaborating institutions in low and middle-income countries, creating a formalized network of institutions in Sweden and collaborating countries.
Research school in health care sciences
National clinical research school in odontology
National research school in clinical psychiatry The research school’s aim was to provide clinicians with up-to-date knowledge within the area of psychiatry such as mechanisms for the origin of psychiatric diseases, the methods to study these as well as methods for treatment.
