Biomedical Laboratory Science 2023-2024

180 Higher Education Credits, 3 years.

To be accepted as an exchange student at Karolinska Institutet you must be enrolled at a higher education institution that has a written exchange agreement with Karolinska Institutet for the specific study programme of interest. Exchange students should be selected and nominated by their home institution, however the final decision on admission is made by Karolinska Institutet.

To find the syllabus for the course or rotation you are interested in, follow the link to the course syllabus archive above.

You need to enter the course codes to access the syllabuses and they can be found right before the name of the courses or rotations listed on this page, under "Options in English" and "Options in Swedish".

Rotations, courses and projects

Rotations may be combined according to the needs of the individual student. Please note that there is only a limited number of places and a study place can therefore not be guaranteed.

The starting date of the rotations is fairly flexible and may be adjusted to fit the study plan of the student. A rotation requires at least 40 hours of work per week. During the clinical rotation the student will be assigned to a clinical supervisor, who will be responsible for ongoing instruction and supervision.

All courses are full-time courses and require at least 40 hours of work per week. A student can only attend one course at a time.

One study week is equivalent to 1.5 ECTS credits. The performance will be graded in accordance with the ECTS grading scale and on the basis of the student's fulfillment of the learning outcomes stated in the course syllabus.

More information about the programme

To start with, students go through the structure and function of the human body from a macro to a micro level. They are also given an introduction to their future career and a general grounding in biomedical laboratory science.

In subsequent terms, students probe more deeply into the analytical methods used to identify diseases such as diabetes, infections, cancer or chromosomal disorders. Analytical methods include the biochemical, immunological, and molecular genetic, and are applied, for example, to blood, tissue or urine. Students can also choose methods used to examine the cardiovascular or pulmonary systems, the brain, nerve system and kidneys, such as ECG, ultrasound, spirometry, EEG and isotope analysis.

In order to be accepted as an exchange student at KI the applicant must be enrolled at a university that has a written exchange agreement with KI for the specific study programme of interest. Exchange students should be nominated by their home institution. The final decision on admission will be made by KI.

After graduation

Authorised biomedical scientists work in hospital laboratories in fields such as clinical chemistry, genetics, pathology, microbiology, immunology or transfusion medicine. Students specialising in physiology can also work in areas such as clinical physiology, neurophysiology or nuclear medicine.

Biomedical scientists also work at healthcare centres or veterinary surgeries, in the pharmaceutical industry or medtech companies, and in the fields of food hygiene, biotechnology, health promotion, and sports medicine.
