Course syllabus for Clinical Rotation in Clinical Physiology
Klinisk utbildning inom klinisk fysiologi
Essential data
Specific entry requirements
- The course turns to incoming exchange students from Biomedical laboratory science education or the equivalent and that have completed a minimum of 105 credits/ECTS of his education.
- The course requires that the student talks and write fluent English.
Outcomes
The general the aim of the course is that the student should have the possibility to deepen and broaden his methodological and diagnostic knowledge within diagnostic fields within clinical physiology. The course mainly includes placement and places strong emphasis at the clinical use of the methods and interpretation of received examination results within the different method areas. The course should also give an increased ability for cooperation both intra- and interprofessionally. Knowledge and understanding: On completion of the course, the student should be able to: Describe the examination routines being used within selected method areas
- Account for commonly occurring formulaes, default values and calculations that should be applied for a quality assured method in diagnostics
- Account for common diseases, their occurrence, cause, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention that occurs within the chosen method areas
Skills and abilities: On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Under supervision prepare and carry out examinations within the current method areas and in connection with this interact with patient and their families and thereby demonstrate a professional way of communication
- In oral and written form present and discuss patient cases and method description within the current method areas
- Independently search, evaluate and critically review relevant information and scientific literature critically within one of the chosen method areas and compile and present a scientific poster around this topic
- Demonstrate the ability to intra- and interprofessional cooperation in a clinical environment
Judgement ability and way of approach: On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate a good interaction and professional attitude vis-à-vis health-care personnel and patients in connection with the clinical training
- Demonstrate the ability to self-knowledge and identify his needs of additional knowledge thereby and continuous develop his skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to good teamwork and good cooperation with different professional groups
Content
The clinical training (placement) includes just over half the course. An individual timetable is written for the student with clinical training and times for presentation of written assignments. Primarily outside time for clinical rotation, the student should work with his written assignments literature studies and similar. However, part of the placement period can be used for gathering of information for these assignments.
Teaching methods
The course is mainly included by placement that is integrated with seminars individual studies and report writing (log book, patient cases and method description) including literature studies. During the clinical placement, the student has a supervisor but is expected largely to himself search and compile information for his reports.
Examination
The course Clinical Physiological Diagnostics is examined with a placement assessment form, log book from placement, written and oral presentation of patient cases and method description and active participation in final supervisory seminar.
All demonstrations, laboratory sessions and practical modules are mandatory. If the student is absent at compulsory subparts, an agreement between the student and responsible teacher is made about compensation of the absence. Possibility to re-examination is given in connection with the course.
At failed clinical placement the student have a possibility to redo this one time only.
The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course.
Other directives
The course will be evaluated in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education at Karolinska Institutet.
