  • Observation and assessment tools
  • Medical procedures
  • Medical-technical apparatus
  • Enteral and parental nutrition
  • Pain and pain treatment
  • Basic hygienic principles

Teaching methods

The teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning in which assignments provide opportunities for students to take active responsibility for their learning. The working methods aim to both integrate the field of the education (nursing, medical scholarship, social- and behavioural science) and to integration of theoretical knowledge in clinic and clinical knowledge in theory. The working methods that are student-activating furthermore intend to facilitate training of a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving and critical reflection. In this course, the following working methods are used : literature studies and clinical placement. During the clinical placement, reflection is required both individually and together with teacher/clinical supervisor.

The clinical placement comprises 40 hours/week (full-time studies) of which about 32 hours/week are in a clinical setting. The remaining 8 hours per week are dedicated to reading literature and searching the Internet. Clinical training centre assignments may include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts, and when appropriate shifts during holidays. Students are not allowed to decrease the length of the clinical placement.

Examination

Compulsory attendance applies to all the days in the clinical activities. The supervisor, together with the teacher, determines, how the student should make up for any absence. Assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place continuously during the course. Half-time and final assessment should be carried out. Clinical supervisor gives basis for assessment according to evaluation forms, the assessment is made together with teacher/clinical lecturer. The course is examined through individual assessment according to evaluation form. The student should have satisfied the requirements of the component parts in order to get a Pass grade in the entire course. Grades are decided by the examiner.

The examiner decides if, and how, absence from compulsory parts can be compensated. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the examiner. Absence from a compulsory course element may mean that the student cannot retake the opportunity until the next time the course is given.

In case of the existence of special reasons, or need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to depart from the syllabus's regulations on examination form, number of examination opportunities, possibility of completion or exemption from compulsory educational elements, etc. Content and intended learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities must not be altered, removed or lowered.

The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patients' trust in healthcare is at risk. When the clinical placement is interrupted in this way, it means that the student fails the current course element, and that one clinical placement opportunity is consumed. In such cases, an individual action plan must be formulated, stating which activities and knowledge assessments are required before the student is given the opportunity for a new placement. Until the action plan is fulfilled, the student should not be placed on a new clinical placement in any education at KI.

The number of knowledge assessments in the action plan is limited to two times. Failed clinical placement may only be carried out a second time. If the student has failed the last possible examination, no action plan should be drawn up. A student who begins and does not complete the placement, without special reasons, shall be awarded the grade Fail. The student has then used up one clinical placement opportunity.

Other directives

The course will be evaluated in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.

The course may not be included in a degree at the same time as a completed and passed course, the content of which fully or partly corresponds to the content of the course.
