Specific entry requirements
Eligibility: This course is offered to exchange students who undertake elective courses in Applied Laboratory Science, Immunology, Molecular Biology or Project work in Sweden. Course requirements (1) Fluency in written English or Swedish (2) Enrolled in a University Course in Biomedical Sciences (or equivalent) and are in the 2rd year or later of their education at their home university. (3) Basic computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Word and Internet searches).
Outcomes
The objective for students is the completion of a literature review on a subject relating to either the elective courses in Immunology or Molecular Biology and completion of a written report on the subject.
Content
The course will contain a one-day programme with lectures on Scientific Writing and good communication, together with assistance from Staff at the Library regarding the use of their facilities. The students will write a report independently that will cover a topic relevant to the elective course in Immunology or Molecular Biology. This subject for the literature review should be a particular genetic disease or disorder of choice and students should review literature regarding this subject. The report should also include laboratory methods pertinent to the study of the particular disease or group of diseases and discuss the use of these methods in research. The report must be at least 3500 words and must contain scientific references in peer-reviewed journals. The report should be written in English or Swedish and contain an Introduction (an up to date review of the field), relevant laboratory methods and a discussion about the use and advantages/disadvantages of these methods. The course can also be studied in parallel with the Project work as an extension of the introduction in the written presentation of the project.
Teaching methods
The report must be written independently but a teacher will be available for discussions if required. Students will have access to the library facilities and computer terminals to complete the literature search and write the paper.
Examination
The written report must be submitted within 5 days of the end of the course.
