Specific entry requirements

  • The course turns to inresande exchange students from Biomedical laboratory science education or the equivalent and that have completed smallest 105 credits/ECTS of his education.
  • The course requires that the student talks and write fluent English.

Outcomes

The general the aim of the course is that the student should obtain occasion to deepen and broaden his methodological and diagnostic knowledge within biomedical laboratory science. Knowledge and understanding On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
• Account for theory and methods within a chosen field within biomedical laboratory science.
• Describe how the current methods are applied in the clinical laboratory.

Skills and ability On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
• Make literature search by means of appropriate descriptors in Pubmed.
• Assess literature critically relevant to a clinical research domain
• Rules for correct quotation and reference management of scientific articles.
• Present a report orally and in writing according to scientific structure.

Judgement and approach On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
• Reflect on the value of scientifically confirmed studies.
• Demonstrate the ability to identify his needs of additional knowledge and to develop his skills

Content

The student should independently write a report that covers a field within biomedical laboratory science. The work should treat a special genetic disease, or other diagnosed disease and the student should make a literature survey concerning this disease. The report should include description of laboratory methods that are used as bases of the diagnosis or at research in the area. The course can also be studied in parallel with the course Project Work within biomedical laboratory science as an expansion of the start of the course in the written work

Teaching methods

The report should write independently under supervision of a teacher. The student should have access to faciliteter of Karolinska Institutet's library.

Examination

As examination format, written and oral report is included. Written report. Grades A/F Respondentships:
- Oral presentation. Grade Fail/Pass
- Defences of the own project. Fail/Pass

Transitional provisions

Examination according to this syllabus will be provided during a year after a decision on close-down of the course or revision of the syllabus
