- talk English, Danish, Norwegian or Swedish, fluently.
- completed 90 credits/ECTS or 1.5 year in the Study Programme in Nursing.
- basic computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Word and Internet).
Outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
Reflect over similarities and differences in nurse's profession and health care systems in Sweden and native country.
- under supervision show skills in relation to the set individual aims
- account and analyse genesis mechanisms, symptoms and treatment principles at acid-base balance disorders
- account and analyse indications and complications at enteral and parental nutrition
- account to and carry out health care technical parts
- identify and analyse pain conditions and evaluate pain treatment
- be familiar with principles of handling of medical-technical apparatus
- apply and explain relationships for hygienic principles in the care
- apply observation - and evaluation forms with a focus on organ functions
- analyse the patient's care needs
Content
The course is school located within unit for somatic care at one of the hospitals that the nursing programme at Karolinska Institutet has agreements with. The contents consist of at the activities occurring part in line with the expected learning outcomes. The training period is on 40 hours a week, of which 32 hours a week take place at the current school located unit. Remaining 8 hours a week is intended for self-study for example literature search and studies of reading list. Compulsory attendance applies to all the days in the clinical activities. The supervisor determines in consultation with teachers how the student should substitute possible absence.
Teaching methods
The teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning in which the tasks provide opportunities for the student to take active
responsibility for their learning aim to both integrate the field of the education (nursing, medical scholarship, social- and behavioural science) and to integration of theoretical knowledge in clinic and clinical knowledge in theory. The working methods that are student-activating furthermore intend to training of a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving and critical reflection. In this course, the following working methods are used : literature studies and placement. Under the placement, reflection is included individually together with teacher/clinical lecturer.
Examination
Assessment of placement.
Compulsory attendance applies to all the days in the clinical activities. The supervisor, together with the teacher, determines, how the student should make up for any absence. Assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place continuously during the course.
The course is examined through individual assessment according to evaluation form.
Under placement, a continuous assessment of the student's achievements takes place. Final assessment should be carried out. Professional supervisor gives basis for assessment according to evaluation forms, the assessment is made together with teacher/clinical lecturer. The student should have satisfied the requirements of the component parts in order to get a Pass grade in the entire course. Grades are assigned by examiner.
For a Pass grade in the course, it is required that the expected learning outcomes are satisfied and participation in compulsory parts. To pass with distinction course is required passed with distinction results in satisfying of learning aim and participation in compulsory parts.
If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus's regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the
course etc. Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.
