Specific entry requirements

Course for exchange students within established agreements between the Physiotherapy Programme at Karolinska Institutet and partner universities abroad. The ECTS grading scale (A – F) will be applied.

General eligibility requirements for university studies, and previous clinical placement equivalent to 12 ECTS (or 8 weeks). In addition, specific eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • a very good command of English or a very good command of Swedish
  • at least 2 years of study at a study programme in Physiotherapy
  • basic computer knowledge

Outcomes

After the course, the student will have an ability to work problem oriented and to apply to physiotherapy theory, professional skills and professional attitude. The student will be trained to suggest and perform clinical assessment and treatment under supervision of the clinical educator.

Content

Clinical rotation at out-patient clinics or hospitals within one or more of the area specified by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. These specialist areas are: Physiotherapist with specialisation in initiatives to

  • patients with pain, injuries and/or diseases in the musculoskeletal system,
  • patients with diseases or injuries in the respiration organs or circulation systems,
  • patients with diseases or injuries in the nervous system,
  • patients with psychic ill-health or psychosomatic problems,
  • children and young people with disabilities or disease, and
  • older persons with physical or psychic disabilities

Teaching methods

Clinical work under supervision of an experienced clinical educator. The student may also take part of lectures, laboratory experiments and group tasks. The student is expected to take an active part in the work in the clinic.

In addition, when arriving at the clinic, the student gets a detailed personal schedule for attendance and also a contact person/clinical educator. The schedule can be changed according to the student’s interest but the contact persons at the involved clinics must always confirm any changes in the schedule. The student will engage in clinical work/activities under the supervision of experienced licensed physiotherapists/clinical educators. The extent of participation in patient and care is to a certain degree determined by the skill level, motivation and initiative of the student.

Examination

The student is expected to complete learning agreement/assignments agreed upon at the start of the clinical rotation. Formative evaluation will be carried out throughout the rotation according to evaluation instruments. Any absence/deviation from learning agreement must be reported to the contact person and also to the responsible teacher. The responsible teacher also makes a decision about how to make up for the absence/missed task after completing the ordinary schedule. The ECTS grading scale (A – F, 7-grades) will be applied.

Transitional provisions

Examination will be provided during a year after a possible closure of the course alternatively at a new course curriculum.

Other directives

Evaluation: The course will be evaluated in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education (Styrelsen för utbildning), Karolinska Institutet. In addition, students are expected to write a written report, which will be open to responsible coordinator at the students home university as well as responsible teacher and clinical educator. Student is also expected to take an active part during formative evaluation during the running course.
