Specific entry requirements
Incoming student on exchange in the Study Programme in Speech Language Pathology. Additionally a good command of English, corresponding to 550 TOEFL scores. At least one year of study (bachelor level) in speech language pathology or equivalent at the foreign partner university.
Outcomes
On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- at a general level describe the speech-language pathology profession and professional activities in Sweden
- give examples of working methods in diagnostics in speech-language pathology and treatment of speech, voice, language and swallowing disorders in Sweden as well as give examples of working methods in collaboration with other professions
- reflect on similarities and differences in speech-language pathologists' work in Sweden and in the country where the student started the study programme.
- reflect on issues that concern equal rights and are related to professional practice such as sex, gender identity and expression, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religion or other expression of belief and disability
Content
The course gives an overview of the speech-language pathology profession and professional activities in Sweden. The course specifically connects theory to practice in the areas of language, reading and writing difficulties in school-aged children, and pediatric dysphagia as well as knowledge about observation and documentation in professional settings. Other clinical specialty areas will also be represented to give both breadth and depth of knowledge. Reflections and discussions about equal opportunities and equal rights within the speech-language pathology profession and comparisons between speech-language pathology practice in different countries are other central themes of the course.
Teaching methods
The course includes lectures, seminars, workshops, online modules, recorded patient meetings, and active auscultations under supervision by speech-language pathologists who work in different settings. Some of these activities may be online. The student will continuously document their reflections and progress during the course.
Seminars, workshops and auscultations are compulsory. If a student is absent from a compulsory activity, the student is responsible for contacting the course director for a replacement assignment. The course director decides if, and if necessary, how, absence from compulsory learning activities can be made up for.
The final study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in the compulsory activities or compensated any absence with assigned tasks in accordance with instructions from the course director. Absence from compulsory learning activities can result in that the student cannot make up for the activity until next time the course is offered.
If there are special reasons, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may make a decision to depart from the syllabus' regulations regarding the form of examination, number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemption from compulsory educational activites, etc. The content and learning objectives and the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.
Examination
Written assignments and a final oral seminar.
All students have to complete the online modules associated with this course. Compulsory attendance is required for auscultations in the clinical settings as per schedule. Course director decides how the student should make up for any absences.
Transitional provisions
Examination can be carried out according to an earlier literature list during a period of one year after the date of a renewal of the literature list. Examination will be provided during a period of one year after a possible closing of the course.
Other directives
The course can only be taken by incoming exchange students. Auscultations are carried out in Swedish settings. Lectures, online modules, supervision, and examination are in English.
Course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education.
