  • Describe in detail how the ability to eat and swallow develops
  • Identify clinicalsymptoms of dysphagia in children, explain the underlying disorder of the swallowing function
and relate it to various diseases and health conditions
  • Choose appropriate methods for assessment, analysis, and intervention of dysphagia in children based on evidence, ethical considerations, and the ICF framework (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health)

Content

The normal swallowing process and its development are discussed, as well as how different factors, such as saliva production, affect the eating and swallowing function. Furthermore, the content covers the occurrence, etiology, and genesis of dysphagia in different disorders, as well as the symptomatology of various forms of dysphagia, e.g., oropharyngeal and esophageal dysphagia . Methods for assessment and intervention related to functional, participation and activity aspects as well as personal and environmental factors are presented, and the evidence for the methods is highlighted. Ethical issues relevant to the area, such as interventions at the end of life and for patients with complex illnesses or who are unable to give consent, as well as dilemmas in the assessment of oral and alternative nutritional routes, need for nutritional intake and quality of life, as well as issues of equal treatment, are also considered.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, , practical exercises individually and in groups. Student active learning and peer learning.

Examination

Written exam which is scored anonymously.

Some learning activites are compulsory. If a student is absent from a compulsory activity, the student is responsible for contacting the course director for a replacement assignment. The course director decides if, and if necessary, how, absence from compulsory learning activities can be made up for. The final study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in the compulsory activities or compensated any absence with assigned tasks in accordance with instructions from the course director. Absence from compulsory learning activities can result in that the student cannot make up for the activity until next time the course is offered.

A student who do not pass the regular examination is entitled to retake the examination on five more occasions. The third examination occasion is the next regular examination on the course. If the student has carried out six failed exams/tests, no additional examinations will be given. The number of times the student has participated in one and the same exam are counted as an examination trial. Submission of a blank exam counts as an examination trial. Examination to which the student registered but not participated in, will not be counted as an examination trial.

If there are special reasons, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may make a decision to depart from the syllabus's regulations regarding the form of examination, number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemption from compulsory educational elements, etc. The content and learning objectives and the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.
