Course syllabus for Clinical rotation 2 for exchange students - Physiotherapy
Verksamhetsförlagd utbildning 2 för utbytesstudenter – fysioterapi
Essential data
Specific entry requirements
The course is intended for exchange students from partner universities with established agreements with the Study Programme in Physiotherapy at Karolinska Institutet.
General eligibility for higher education studies is required, as well as previous clinical placement equivalent to 12 ECTS (or eight weeks). Additional specific entry requirements:
- very good knowledge of English or Swedish
- at least two years of studies in a physiotherapy programme or equivalent education
A student who has failed a clinical placement due to serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or professional conduct jeopardizing patient safety or trust in healthcare is only eligible for a new placement after fulfilling an individual action plan.
Outcomes
In clinical practice, under supervision, the student will progress in their professional identity and be able to:
- integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in an international physiotherapy context through participation in patient assessment and treatment, and formulate and evaluate physiotherapeutic goals
- act professionally in communication with patients, next of kin, and other healthcare professionals
- reflect on similarities and differences in the role of physiotherapists in Sweden compared to the home country and in relation to global health
- demonstrate active engagement in clinical work, clinical learning and evidence-based practice
Content
The course consists of clinical placement within clinical settings affiliated with the Study Programme in Physiotherapy at Karolinska Institutet. The extent of patient contact varies depending on clinical context and student competence.
Teaching methods
The student participates in clinical work and activities under supervision of licensed physiotherapists/clinical supervisors. Teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative learning approach where students take active responsibility for their learning.
The clinical placement comprises 40 hours per week, of which 32 hours are compulsory clinical work and 8 hours are allocated for self-study and reflection. Students are not allowed to compress the placement.
Examination
Attendance in clinical placement is mandatory. Assessment is based on learning outcomes. The clinical supervisor evaluates student progression; the examiner decides the final grade based on that assessment. Formative assessment is carried out continuously.
The grading scale uses Pass/Fail. Results may be converted to another grading scale (e.g., A–F) if required by partner university.
The examiner decides whether, and if so, how absence from mandatory elements may be compensated. Results cannot be reported until absence is made up.
The examiner may terminate a student’s clinical placement with immediate effect if serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or professional approach jeopardize patient safety or trust. Such cases count as a failed placement and one placement opportunity is used. An action plan is then created with the partner university. Failed clinical placement may only be repeated once.
If specific reasons apply or adaptations are needed for students with disabilities, the examiner may decide on deviations from examination requirements, but learning outcomes cannot be altered.
Transitional provisions
Examination will be offered for one year after discontinuation or change of syllabus.
