Outcomes

The student should be able to describe and apply the different parts of the nursing process, account for, identify, carry out and evaluate the effects of basic nursing, document implemented basic nursing actions, account for, carry out and evaluate the effects of prescriptions and treatments, aseptics and hygienic principles in nursing, account for and implement drug prescriptions, describe causes of and prevent complications of bed rest, describe and apply ergonomic principles in nursing, at a general level describe the organisation of the healthcare, account for the areas of responsibilities and activities of different staff categories, account for relevant laws and regulations

Content

Exercise in the use of the nursing process, and to identify. carry out and evaluate basic nursing actions. Application of hygienic principles in nursing, in order to prevent infection and contamination. The use of ergonomic principles in nursing in order to prevent occupational injuries is emphasised. The students should carry out and evaluate effects of prescriptions, simple treatments and examinations. Train different forms of drug dosage and administration, subcutaneous and intramuscular injection, intravenous infusions, and derive to relevant regulations belonging to the field. Monitoring and maintenance of indwelling urinary catheters. Exercise in pulse and blood pressure measurement, venous sampling and insertion of a peripheral vein catheter, handling and maintenance of a peripheral vein catheter, are included. Laws and ordinances that regulate the care are presented. The organisation and quality assurance work of the healthcare is presented, at a general level.

Teaching methods

Placement (VFU) is carried out in somatic care in a medical or surgical care unit. The course starts and is completed with campus-located teaching and, in between, three weeks of placement take place under supervision of a nurse. The studies are characterised by the students' active knowledge acquisition, reflection and critical attitudes. Seminars, proficiency training and placement, including a reflection session, are compulsory parts. During the placement, the supervising nurse in consultation with a clinical junior lecturer continuously provides information on the student's abilities, and at the end of the period a written assessment according to an established form. Examination

Assessment of the students' learning and achievements takes place continuously during the course. The course is examined through individual written assignments, seminars, practical tests and approved placement. Regarding the individual examinations, there are no more than six examination opportunities (6), after three (3) failed examinations the students are given the possibility to re-take the course once more according to KI's guidelines. For clinical education, the placement may be redone once in accordance with KI's guidelines The Pass grade requires a Pass grade in the clinical education, and in theoretical and practical examinations. A Pass with distinction requires a Pass grade in the clinical education and a Pass with distinction in the theoretical and practical examinations.
