General requirements - A very good command of English, corresponding to 550 TOEFL scores, or a very good command of Swedish, corresponding to a pass in the TISUS-test - Three years of study at a study programme in Medicine Ability to take medical history and to perform a physical examination of a patient Basic computer knowledge Specific requirements - Passed medical schools basic course in internal medicine or equivalent - Basic knowledge of common psychiatric disorders - Passed the first four weeks clinical rotation
Outcomes
After the course, students are expected to: show a more profound knowledge of psychiatry with focus on analysis and evaluation. Further, the student will have the possibility to improve his/her skills in management of frequently met cases of mental disorders. reflect on important questions such as attitudes, ethics, gender and ethnicity in relation to psychiatry. reach a progression in knowledge and understanding of psychiatric disorders regarding their numerous facets with a starting point in each individual students level of knowledge. The course is suitable for students planning a career as a clinician, irrespective of discipline.
Content
The clinical rotation can include auscultation at various units i.e. in-patient wards, general psychiatric out-patient clinics as well as at specialised units for affective disorders, psychotic disorders and eating disorders etc. An individualised schedule is set up by a responsible supervisor. During these second four weeks of clinical rotation, with regard to the students individual qualifications and interests, the goals not fulfilled during the first rotation should be met. A continued emphasis will be put on the students training in psychiatry history-taking, mental state examination and evaluation of the findings. Time is given for studies of literature and Internet searches.
Teaching methods
Emphasis is put on clinical work and auscultation at different clinics. The extent of participation in patient care is determined by the students experience and ability. The student should have the opportunity to carry through a conversation with a patient under supervision of a tutor. The student is required to study relevant literature and to write logbook. The rotation includes personal supervision delivered by a physician at the unit. When arriving at the psychiatric department at Karolinska University Hospital - Huddinge or Solna - or at the psychiatric department at St Göran´s hospital the student will get a detailed schedule. Any absence must be reported to the supervisor, who also makes a decision about how to make up for the absence.
Examination
A logbook should be written by the student and has to be reported to the supervisor. The logbook should include relevant information about the patients encountered. If possible, the patient explored and presented more in detail during the first four weeks, should be followed up. Also, another patient should be chosen for a more detailed exploration. The logbook data has to be presented no less than five days before the end of the rotation in psychiatry.
