Klinisk rotation, infektionssjukdomar
Essential data
Specific entry requirements
At least 3 years of studies in medicine.
Students who fail a clinical placement (or equivalent) as a result of demonstrating such a serious lack of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or the patients' confidence in medical care is at risk, will only be qualified for a new clinical placement once the individual action plan has been carried out.
Outcomes
Aim
The aim of the course is that the student should acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes within the field of infectious medicine.
Learning outcomes
The student should be able to:
- take a medical history and perform a physical examination at suspected infectious disease
- describe, explain and analyse common symptoms and clinical findings in common and important diseases and health problems in infectious medicine
- know which diagnostic methods that are available in the area
- diagnose and establish a treatment plan for common and important conditions in infectious medicine
- act respectfully toward patients, other students, teachers and staff and take active responsibility for learning
Content
The course content is focused on the field of speciality infection medicine. The main focus is on clinical practice with patient-based teaching and individual feedback, to facilitate further development of skills.
The student will be assigned a personal schedule for participation in clinical work and will also be offered the possibility to attend different units in the department of infectious diseases such as emergency department, ward and out-patient department.
Teaching methods
Primarily work-based education, with personal supervision.
Depending on their previous experience and knowledge, students can, to a varying degree, be given the possibility to actively take part in the work performed. Student must use a log book with reflections as well as acquire the ability to search and evaluate relevant scientific articles following the principles of evidence-based medicine.
Teaching will be performed in English. Teaching in evenings and at night may occur. Students are scheduled 40 hours' per week, during which time is allocated for literature studies.
Examination
Compulsory elements:
Clinical rotation
Formative assessment of log book by supervisor every week.
Examination:
Written examination in the form of a case report or literature search should be presented 5 days before end of course.
The course coordinator decides if, and how, absence from compulsory parts can be compensated.
Until the student has participated in the compulsory parts (or compensated any absence with assigned tasks in accordance with instructions from the course director) the final study results can not be reported. Absence from a mandatory education element could mean that the student can not do the part until the next time the course is offered.
Limitation of number of tests or practical training sessions
Student who do not pass the regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination at five more occasions.
If student implemented six failed examinations/test be given no additional examination. Regarding placement components have student right to go through these two (2) times.
If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus's regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the course etc. Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.
Termination of clinical rotation
The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical rotation, or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk.
If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity.
In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for a new clinical placement on the course.
Transitional provisions
If a course has been cancelled or undergone major changes, at least two additional examinations (excluding regular examinations) on the previous contents will be provided within a year of the date of the change.
Other directives
Course evaluation is implemented according to guidelines established by the Committee for Higher Education and the medical programme at Karolinska Institutet.
