Specific entry requirements

General requirements - A very good command of English, corresponding to 550 TOEFL scores, or a very good command of Swedish, corresponding to a pass in the TISUS-test. - Three years of study at a study programme in Medicine - Basic computer knowledge Specific requirements - Passed medical school’s basic course in internal medicine or equivalent.

Outcomes

By the end of the course the student should be able to: 1. recognize, describe, explain and evaluate common symptoms and finding of ENT diseases 2. diagnose and make a treatment plan for the most common and important diseases within the field 3. perform an ENT examination including fiberscopy of the upper respiratory tract as well as otoneurologic examination 4. search and evaluate medical information on evidenced based treatment of ENT diseases 5. reflect on various professional aspects in medicine such as attitudes, gender, ethnicity, age and health economy.

Content

The clinical rotation comprises 40 hours duty per week at the Karolinska University Hospital Solna or Huddinge. During the first couple of days the student is supposed to follow a supervisor, an appointed senior doctor, through his or her weekly routine in order to meet the colleagues, learn the weekly schedule as well as the facilities at the department. For the remaining period an individual schedule is made with auscultation in the various units of the department, and the student is required to rotate between e.g. the otology and the oncology teams, as well as auscultation at audiology and phoniatrics. The student is also supposed the follow the work both at the outpatient clinic as well as the O.R. Time is given for studies of literature and internet searches.

Teaching methods

The rotation includes continuous personal supervision delivered by the physicians at the department. The student is required to study the course literature and to write reports Compulsory attendance Attendance to all clinical visits/duties is required. The supervisor decides how the student should compensate for any failure to attend.

Examination

The clinical rotation is finished by oral examination covering the outcomes of the course.
