Specific entry requirements

- A very good command of English, corresponding to 550 TOEFL scores, or a very good command of Swedish, corresponding to a pass in the TISUS-test. - Three years of study at a study programme in medicine - Basic computer knowledge. A student who has failed the work-based education due to such a serious lack in terms of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patients’ confidence in medical care is jeopardised is qualified to a new opportunity only when the individual action plan has been completed.

Outcomes

The overall curricular learning outcomes of the course is that the student, with starting point from and by integrating his or her personal medical and scientific level into studies that contributes to the students’ choice in studying in depth areas of particular interest by planning, carry through, analyze, discuss and report a project in a scientific manner. Knowledge outcomes are graded according to the SOLO-taxonomy (S1-S4) and skills according to the Miller pyramide (M1-M4) *. Knowledge and understanding The student ought to - be able to show an understanding of, and insight in, the use of scientific methods (S3) - be able to show a profound knowledge and understanding of the chosen area of study (S4) - have gotten experience in personal completion of a project (S3) Skills: The student ought to - be able to formulate a clear and limited aim of a research project (M3) - be able to show a problem solving capacity and an ability to integrate knowledge (M3) - be able to analyze and evaluate data and discuss results and conclusions (M3) - have increased his or her critical thinking by the use of medical scientific literature (M3) - be able to compile and write a report and cite references by the style Vancouver (M3) - have put to trial his or her capacity to creativity, critical thinking and responsibility (M3) - have put to trial his or her interest to further academic work (M3) Attitude: The student ought to - have been able to increase his or her personal motivation to the studies through contact with parts of a physicians tasks (S3) - have put to use an international perspective of thinking at a basic level, through literature or field work (M3)

Content

In a consistently growing medical knowledge, the project courses provide possibilities to in depth knowledge by individual choice and is to be performed integrated with the core curriculum. The student starts off from his or her individual level of medical knowledge and scientific skills acquired within the program and at the level of minimum 120 credits. A scientific approach is the basis for the course. Professional development is another main integrated part. The specific requirements for each project in terms of competence, skills, curricular integration, clinical areas, special considerations (gender, ethnicity, religion, dysfunction) is to be specified before the start of the course in a by the student written project plan consistent with the standardized draft. The project plan is written by the student in cooperation with the tutor and presented to and accepted by the committé of elective studies (SVK)

Teaching methods

The project is planned by the student with guidance from the tutor. The specific study components included may vary by the nature of the course content and area. The course is always concluded by a written individual report, that always include the students own analysis and conclusion. It should contain annex with a reflection as well as a proper reference section according to the Vancouver style. The complete project is to be summarized into a short abstract.

Examination

Compulsory components: Plan for the project. Individually written report. Reference section. Abstract. A student’s work-based education may be ended immediately if the student demonstrates such a serious lack in terms of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patients’ confidence in medical care is jeopardised. If the work-based education is ended in this way, an individual action plan should be drawn up detailing the activities and knowledge checks required before the student may continue with work-based education.
