Specific entry requirements
Previous sufficient studies in Midwifery at a Midwifery Programme outside of Sweden. A good command of English.
Outcomes
The overall goal of the course is that the student should have achieved knowledge and skills within the midwifes scope of practice in Sweden and be able to compare and reflect upon the midwifes scope of practice, working conditions and professional role in the different countries.
After having completed the course the student should be able to:
- contribute in providing care to promote health during the perinatal period
- support, examin and monitor the pregnant woman and the baby in connection with childbearing
- achieve insight in and be able to describe the swedish midwives scope of practice within sexual, reproductive and perinatal health
- reflect in situations considering scientific, social, cultural and ethical aspects in connection with childbearing
Content
The course includes clinical rotation and theoretical teaching within the midwifery scope of practice. .
Teaching methods
The teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning in which the tasks provide opportunities for the student to take active responsibility for their learning. The used teaching methods are clinical training and theorethical studies. .
Clinical placements are mandatory. The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from mandatory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsary course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator.
The clinical rotation consists of 40 hours/week of which 32 hours/week are planned in the clinic. Day-,evening-, night- and weekendshifts occurs and also holidays. Students do not have the right to compress the clinical rotation.
Examination
Assesment takes place through an oral presentation where the student should contrast and reflect upon midwifery issues in a Swedish context and the context at home.
The examiner may, with immediate effect, interrupt a student's clinical placement (or equivalent) if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. If a clinical placement is interrupted in this way the student is deemed to have failed that element and to have used up one clinical placement opportunity.
