Specific entry requirements

Lowest the grade Pass at the courses Introduction to toxicology, Target organ toxicology, Health risk assessment of chemicals, Biochemical and molecular toxicology, Laboratory animal science in theory and practice, Toxicokinetics and Histopathology within the Master's programme in toxicology.

Outcomes

The course intends to give the students possibility to under supervision and with independent work plan and carry out a laboratory or risk assessment-related project within the toxicological field.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

- acquire and critically review relevant scientific literature in support of broadening and deepening his or her knowledge of the chosen project and its toxicological field,
- plan a project and be able to explain the choice of methods to solve a pretended scientific issue,
- collect data and/or other relevant information for compilation and analysis.

Skills and ability
- show initiative in independent, critical and creative thinking,
- be able to apply adequate methods to solve a pretended scientific issue,
- be able to discuss his or her own work and evaluate its relevance in a broader scientific and societal perspective,
- be able to present his or her work in written and oral form.

Judgement and approach
- show a professional approach regarding time planning, collegial cooperation and connection between theoretical and practical expertise,
- in a reassuring way and with good order handle scientific material,
- carry out the project work on a research-ethical correct way.

Content

Individual work with experimental or risk assessment specialisation. An individual study plan, which also serves as project description, is established by the supervisor together with the student before the course start. Projects can also be carried out at another university or public authority than Karolinska Institutet or at a company.

Teaching methods

Individual work under supervision and participation in seminars and meetings where the project work is carried out. Studies of scientific literature according to the recommendation of supervisor and own assessment.

Examination

The course is examined through a written and oral presentation. For pass with distinction, it is required that the written report obtains the grade pass with distinction. The supervisor's assessment is included in the assignment of the final grade.

Project placement
The examiner may immediately suspend a student's project placement or equivalent if the student demonstrates serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes in a way that trust with the partner may be damaged or broken.

Transitional provisions

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the fall semester of 2015. Examination will be provided until the fall semester of 2024 for students who have not completed the course.

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Higher Education.
