Specific entry requirements

Dental Degree of at least 180 credits. In addition, knowledge of English equivalent to English B (with a grade of Pass) is required. Students who fail the clinical proficiency training as a result of demonstrating such a serious lack of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or the patients’ confidence in medical care is at risk, will only be qualified to resume the clinical proficiency training once the individual action plan has been carried out.

Outcomes

The student should, on completion of the course, be able to:

  • apply laws and other regulations that pertain to the speciality
  • design and evaluate interventions to create good oral health at a group and population level and account for the scientific basis for treatment
  • independently reflect on the importance of social determinants for health and illness
  • cooperate with social service, child-care, school, non-profit-making compounds and the departments of the society
  • demonstrate an ethical and professional attitude
  • independently reflect on and have an understanding of children's living conditions with special respect to human rights, international conventions as well as laws and regulations such as the Parental Code and the Social Services Act,
  • advocate children and adolescents right in society, both nationally and globally.

Content

How prerequisites for good oral health are created through laws and rules and how the dental care is organised. The importance of knowledge management and manning and educational planning as well as cooperation between the dental care and other actors in health care. How one creates prerequisites for oral health from a public health perspective. The determinants and meaning of different concepts of health such as disease, health, quality of life, socio-economic factors and equal/unequal health. UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child and other conventions concerning children and adolescents. Ethics in pediatric dentistry.

Teaching methods

Theoretical studies, seminars and case presentations.

All teaching activities are compulsory.

Examination

Written examination. Presentation of patient case. Passed ethical reflection. Certificate about satisfied competence requirements issued by course coordinator or supervisor.

The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical proficiency training if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When the clinical proficiency training is interrupted like this, the student is deemed to have failed the clinical part of the course. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for clinical proficiency training in the course.
