Specific entry requirements
Dental Degree of at least 180 credits. In addition, knowledge of English equivalent to English B (with a grade of Pass) is required. Students who fail the clinical proficiency training as a result of demonstrating such a serious lack of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or the patients’ confidence in medical care is at risk, will only be qualified to resume the clinical proficiency training once the individual action plan has been carried out.
Outcomes
The student should, on completion of the course, be able to:
- independently reflect on how the healthy child and the adolescent is influenced by inheritance, culture, environment and society and how these factors have importance for the oral and general health of children and adolescents as well as apply appropriate treatment based on science or proven experience,
- identify children that are maltreated and take adequate measures including following the reporting obligation
- inform, justify and instruct in health promotion work,
- account for orofacial diseases and oral manifestations in children and adolescents with serious diseases and physical disabilities as well as choose and evaluate different treatment options,
- plan and carry out dental care based on evidence-based knowledge for children and adolescents with intellectual and psychiatric physical disabilities, behavioural problems as well as communication problems.
Content
The normal growth, rearing, psychomotor and mental development of adolescents. The right of children and adolescents to participate at assessment and treatment based at their level of development. How orofacial diseases and the general state of health influence children and adolescents and their families.
Teaching methods
Theoretical studies and seminars as well as case presentations. Clinical duty under supervision at the section for section for Pediatric Dentistry, the Department of Dental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet.
All teaching activities are compulsory.
Examination
Written examination. Presentation of patient case. Clinical examination. Certificate about satisfied competence requirements issued by course coordinator or supervisor.
The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical proficiency training if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for clinical proficiency training in the course.
