Specific entry requirements

Dental Degree of at least 180 credits. In addition, knowledge of English equivalent to English B (with a grade of Pass) is required. Students who fail the clinical proficiency training as a result of demonstrating such a serious lack of knowledge, skills or attitude that patient safety or the patients’ confidence in medical care is at risk, will only be qualified to resume the clinical proficiency training once the individual action plan has been carried out.

Outcomes

The student should, on completion of the course, be able to:

  • evaluate diagnostics and investigation as well as analyse the need for treatment based on science and proven experience of children and adolescents with uncontrolled caries progression and with high caries risk,
  • evaluate diagnostics and investigation as well as choose and evaluate treatment based on science and proven experience of children and adolescents with dental erosions,
  • evaluate diagnostics and investigation as well as choose and evaluate treatment based on science and proven experience of children and adolescents with serious disturbances in the number, mineralisation and eruption of the teeth,
  • evaluate diagnostics and investigation as well as analyse the need for treatment and caretaking of children and adolescents with functional disorders and pain conditions related to the jaws.

Content

How heritage, culture, environment influence the development of oral diseases in children and adolescents. Design and evaluate interventions to create good oral health at a group and population level in the pediatric dental care. Advocate a healthy life style in children and adolescents. Preventive and family oriented work with health information. Work in multi-disciplinary teams and cooperate with other specialities in dental care. Investigate, diagnose and plan treatment of different functional disorders in the jaws.

Teaching methods

Theoretical studies and seminars as well as case presentations. Clinical duty under supervision at the section for section for Pediatric Dentistry, the Department of Dental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet.

All teaching activities are compulsory.

Examination

Written examination. Presentation of patient case. Clinical examination. Certificate about satisfied competence requirements issued by course coordinator or supervisor.

The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical proficiency training if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When the clinical proficiency training is interrupted like this, the student is deemed to have failed the clinical part of the course. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up stating which activities and tests are required before the student is qualified for clinical proficiency training in the course.
