Course syllabus for Physiotherapy in Neurological Disability, Contract Education

Specific entry requirements

Degree of Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy of at least 180 credits or a Bachelor's Degree in Physiotherapy. And proficiency in Swedish and English equivalent to Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6.

Outcomes

The student should
- be able to analyse, assess and evaluate physiotherapeutic assessment, treatment and evaluation methods for patients with neurological disability,
- be able to argue both for advantages and disadvantages of different physiotherapeutic methods in neurological disability and suggest a treatment for various patient cases
- achieve advanced knowledge in, and independently demonstrate a critical and scientific attitude to any subject area within the framework of the course, and
- demonstrate skills to communicate this orally and in writing to other students in the course.

Content

The course deals with the function of the nervous system, physiotherapy for stroke and other brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease, neuromuscular diseases and spinal cord injuries.

Teaching methods

All course components included are based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning in which forms of work provide opportunities for the student to take active responsibility for their own learning.

The course consists of lectures (1 / 3), laboratory sessions, seminars, group assignments, individual assignments including written and oral examinations (2 / 3).

Attendance is required at scheduled course meetings. Absence is compensated by the student with written complementary assignments concerning the learning activities that one is absent from. Between the course meetings time is required for reading the course literature, work with indivudual tasks and assignments on the course web.

Examination

The forms of examination are:
a) active participation in lectures/seminars and at laboratory sessions with oral presentation of study assignments,
b) written and oral presentation of patient cases according to the case method and active participation in case seminars,
c) written and oral presentation of individual assignments on methods of measurement and treatment methods, and active participation in seminars on measurement methods and literature.

Students who do not pass at the regular examination are entitled to make supplements to the individual written assignments on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations, no additional examination is given.

Transitional provisions

Examination will be provided during a time of two years after a possible close-down of the course. Examination can take place according to an earlier literature list during a time of one year after the date when a renewal of the literature list has been made.

Other directives

Language of instruction: Swedish.

Course evaluation is made orally and in writing twice during the course and with Karolinska Institutet's course evaluation on completion of the course.
