Outcomes

The goal of the course is to give the students an opportunity to work, under supervision, with a research project within the field of biomedicine. The students will thereby improve their skills and independent work in the laboratory. Knowledge and understanding •The student shall be able to perform experimental methods to solve a given scientific task. •The student shall be able to collect data for evaluation and for statistical treatment. •The student shall be able to read scientific literature of relevance to the project. •The student shall be able to write a research proposal based on acquired literature. Applying knowledge and understanding •The student shall show independence, critical and creative thinking. •The student shall be able to formulate new scientific questions in connection with the project. Making judgements •The student shall appreciate the benefit of realistic time planning, collaboration, and the link between theoretical and practical knowledge. •The student shall in a safe manner and in good order be able to handle valuable scientific material. •The student shall perform the project work in an ethical correct manner.

Content

Individual work with literature studies. An individual study plan will be written by the student and supervisor together, which also serves as a project description. The project work can be performed at other universities than Karolinska Institutet.

Teaching methods

Individual work under supervision and participation in seminars and journal clubs at the department. Reading of scientific literature as recommended by the supervisor and the students´ own judgement.

Examination

Written summary of the work in the form of a brief scientific article and an oral presentation for the other students and examiner. The examiner sets the grading after consultation with the supervisor and the examining teacher based on work performance and the presentation.

Transitional provisions

After each course there will be at least 6 opportunities to sit the examination within a two-years period.

Other directives

Evaluation of the course will be done after the course.
