Outcomes
On completion of the course, the students are expected to:
- have general knowledge of what a drug is, how drugs can be administered, what drugs do to the body, what the body does to drugs, and how drugs are metabolised and eliminated.
- have general knowledge of neurotransmission in the central and peripheral nervous system, and how drugs can interact with this
- have theoretical knowledge and certain practical experience of how certain drugs may influence the functions of the eye.
- have good theoretical knowledge on the treatment of glaucoma
- have general knowledge of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, and knowledge how to treat inflammation and infection in the eye.
Content
The emphasis is placed on drugs that affect the nervous system, and especially the eye function, and on drugs that are used in various pathological conditions in the eye.
The aim of the course:
The course aims to give basic knowledge on the fate of drugs in the organism and mechanisms behind certain drugs' therapeutic effects and adverse drug reactions (pharmacological principles).
Teaching methods
The teaching includes lectures, problem-oriented group exercise under teacher supervision and a laboratory session.
Examination
The examination comprises assignments and an examination at the end of the course. For admission to an examination, compulsory participation and approved assignments are required.
Attendance at group exercise and laboratory session. In case of absence from compulsory parts, measures are discussed with the course director.
Transitional provisions
The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the spring semester of 2008.

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
