Specific entry requirements
For admission to the course, it is required that the student is admitted to the Study Programme in Nursing with general entry requirements for higher education in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7 (Swedish Statute Book 1998:1003). Furthermore, 30 credits from each of semesters one, two, three and four, and at least 15 credits from semester five.
Outcomes
The aim of the course is that the student should acquire knowledge in geriatrics and care in the end of life. Furthermore, the student should acquire training in identifying and assessing the patient's needs of care, and practice to independently plan, carry out, document and evaluate specific nursing actions. An additional aim is that the student should reflect on the caring process and analyse how it is controlled and influenced by laws and organisation, as a support in the profession as a nurse. In part 1, the student should acquire knowledge in geriatrics as a support in the profession as a nurse, to be able to - understand the manifestations of geriatric diseases and processes - understand the aetiology and genesis of geriatric diseases - identify risks in order to prevent complications and unhealth - understand and anticipate the elderly's specific reactions to drugs - understand the special needs of nourishment and nutrient supply of the elderlies In part 2, the student should acquire knowledge in clinical geriatrics, as a support in the profession as a nurse, to be able to - observe and assess different medical symptoms and functional disorders and abnormalities related to pathological conditions - identify and carry out preventive nursing measures in order to prevent disease and unhealth - understand, participate at, carry out and evaluate geriatric care and rehabilitation - prioritise medical care needs in different diseases and, when necessary, interact with medical expertise - use medical observation and assessment instruments relevant in geriatric care - take part of computer-based medical documentation, medical assessment instruments and evidence-based geriatric medicine - apply laws, ordinances and safety directions within geriatric care - assess, carry out and evaluate the elderly patient's specific care needs - master advanced medical technology and use medical devices, independently In part 3, the student should acquire advanced medical knowledge as a support in the profession as a nurse in home care service to be able to - observe and assess different medical symptoms and functional disorders and deviations related to pathological conditions - identify and carry out preventive nursing measures in order to prevent disease and unhealth - understand, participate at, carry out and evaluate palliative care and rehabilitation - prioritise medical care needs in different diseases and, when necessary, interact with medical expertise - understand, participate in, carry out and evaluate care in the end of life - use observation and assessment instruments relevant within home care service - take part of computer-based medical documentation, medical assessment instruments and evidence-based medicine in home care service - apply laws, ordinances and safety regulations within home care service - assess, carry out and evaluate the specific care needs of the seriously ill and dying patient - master advanced nursing technique and independently use medical devices in the home environment Further, palliative care and rehabilitation, and care at the end of life with a special focus on home care are studied. The clinical education consists of two coherent periods, one in geriatric care and rehabilitation, where the student independently under supervision practices to plan, carry out, document and evaluate specific nursing actions in elderly, and one in home care service where the student practices to independently assess, plan, carry out, document and evaluate specific nursing actions in the seriously ill patient.
Content
The course is divided in three parts: Part 1. Geriatrics and home care 1.5 HE credits In the course, aetiology, pathology, diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation in common geriatric diseases are studied such as - dementia diseases - cardiovascular diseases - cerebrovascular diseases - Parkinson disease - diabetes - osteoporosis Further, palliative care and rehabilitation, and care at the end of life with a special focus on home care are studied. Part 2. Clinical education - geriatric care, 3 HE credits Part 3. Clinical education - home care, 3 HE credits The clinical education consists of two coherent periods, one in geriatric care and rehabilitation, where the student independently under supervision practices to plan, carry out, document and evaluate specific nursing actions in elderly, and one in home care service where the student practices to independently assess, plan, carry out, document and evaluate specific nursing actions in the seriously ill patient.
Teaching methods
The working methods aim to integrate the field of education (nursing, medical science, social and behavioural science) and to integrate theoretical knowledge in a clinic and clinical knowledge in theory. Furthermore, the working methods aim to train a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical reflection and analysis. In this course, the following working methods are used : group exercise, lectures, seminars, literature studies, proficiency training and clinical education. In clinical education, supervision and reflection are included, individually and in groups. The course comprises compulsory teaching. Group exercise and placement are always compulsory, otherwise, turn to the study guide and timetable in which compulsory parts are indicated. Examination
Assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place continuously during the course. This course is examined through individual written study assignments and practical tests. Part 1 is examined through a written individual examination assignment Part 2 is examined through a written and oral individual examination assignment and through individual follow-up of clinical skills. Part 3 is examined through a written individual examination assignment with follow-up in a seminar and through individual follow-up of clinical skills. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination opportunities for each course. Examination times are announced at the beginning of the course. During the clinical education, a continuous assessment of the students' achievements is conducted. Half-time and final assessment should be conducted. Professional supervisors provide a basis for assessment according to the evaluation forms. For students at the risk of failure, a written plan should be set up, at the latest at the mid-way assessment, by the course coordinator together with a professional supervisor. The student should have satisfied the requirements of the component parts in order to get a Pass grade in the entire course. Grades are assigned by examiner. Failed clinical education may be done once more.
