Specific entry requirements
For admission to the course, it is required that the student is admitted to the Study Programme in Nursing with general entry requirements for higher education in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7 (Swedish Statute Book 1998:1003). Furthermore, 30 credits from each of the semesters one, two, three and the four, and at least 15 credits from semester five.
Outcomes
The aim of the course is for the student to acquire advanced training to independently identify, assess needs of support, and evaluate nursing based on a resource and holistic perspective on the patient. In addition, the student should acquire advanced training in nursing documentation on the basis of nursing theory. Further aims are that the student should enhance his/her reflection on an ethical and metaphysical issue in the care of elderly and enhance his/her knowledge in nursing patients at the end of life including treatment of the family. Furthermore, the student should independently conduct preventive care at a society level, based on a cultural, socio-economic, gender and age perspective. The course also comprises advanced training in family-focused nursing, to stimulate the family to take active part in the nursing, and training in the administrative and pedagogical leadership as a nurse. The aim is also that the student, based on clinical care and rehabilitation work, should train to cooperate with other nursing professions to get an understanding of others domains. In part 1, on completion of the course, the student should - understand the application of the nursing process in geriatric nursing - identify and pay attention to health resources related to aging and enhance his/her knowledge of the implication of living with physical, mental and intellectual disabilities - acquire insights into care planning with a patient, family, and different professional groups, and the multi-disciplinary team's responsibility for transfer of information between in-patient and out-patient care - enhance the knowledge of organisations for pensioners, disabled and patients, as external supportive resources - deepen the understanding of the importance of different service functions in geriatric nursing and home care - deepen the understanding of long-term care and living conditions, and the understanding of society resources as a support from the nursing-political point of view - enhance the awareness of the importance of various nursing environments to stimulate an active and meaningful life in the patient in geriatric care and home care service - understand the meaning of laws and regulations relevant to geriatric nursing within the nurse's area of responsibility - deepen an understanding of health economics within geriatric nursing and home care service - analyse and evaluate different quality systems in geriatric nursing and home care service - deepen the knowledge about good nursing of patients in the final stage of life - analyse health care ethical problems related to aging and death - increase the consciousness about priorities within geriatric nursing and home care service In part 2, on completion of the course, the student should - independently carry out individually adapted nursing in the elderly patient, based on nursing diagnosis from a holistic perspective and from a resource perspective - contribute to the creation of good social environments for e.g. eating, activities and a social, daily life - enhance and apply the nursing methods with a focus on ADL activities, self-care rehabilitation locomotion techniques and aids, and creative activities such as drama, role playing, art, music and humour - carry out nursing of a patient at the end of life, and contribute to a good relation and a good support to family - get an understanding of quality systems in geriatric care and identify and formulate quality indicators for nursing - identify, develop and preserve personal qualities and a consciousness of value conflicts in geriatric nursing - independently inform, provide health information and teaching to patients and family, and teach and supervise students and staff - independently train leadership, both administratively and pedagogically, in patient care planning, in cooperation with other professions - train leadership concerning mentorship and supervision in nursing - independently present patient situations, and initiate and participate in clinical seminars - apply nursing informatics: training in computer-based nursing documentation and evidence-based geriatric nursing and home care, and the use of nursing assessment instruments In part 3, on completion of the course, the student should - understand the application of the nursing process in home care service - independently carry out individually adapted nursing in the home care patient, based on nursing diagnosis from a holistic perspective and from a resource perspective, - independently train the nursing methods with a focus on pedagogical and developmental activities - identify and support health resources in home care patients - analyse ethical problems in health care, related to care in the home environment - identify and formulate quality indicators for nursing within home care service - identify and consider gender and cultural aspects in the home care work. - inform about and apply laws and regulations relevant to the home care service in the nurse's area of responsibility - act independently in complex nursing situations at home - independently inform, provide health information and self treatment guidance to patients and family, and teaching and supervision of students and staff - independently train leadership in different home environments, considering both ethical aspects and cross-professional cooperation - train leadership concerning mentorship and supervision in nursing as an intervention to strengthen individual work, intimate health care conditions and dependencies In part 4, on completion of the course, the student should - with a high grade of independence meet the patient's need of medical treatment - nursing and rehabilitation - develop his own professional skills and obtain perspectives on his own professional role in the teamwork - develop an understanding of the skills of other professions and professional roles, and the understanding of the patient as a resource in the care - obtain deeper understanding about the implication of a professional ethical attitude - develop a deeper understanding of communication and team work
Content
The course is divided in four parts: Part 1 Geriatric nursing and home care, 1.5 HE credits From a self-care rehabilitation perspective, and with nursing methods: apply ADL activities, pedagogical activities, creative activities and maturity and developmental activities to support patients to cope with their living conditions as independently as possible, while preserving life-satisfaction and meaning of life. There is a focus on possibilities and limitations related to nursing environments, multiprofessional teams and transfer of information between open care and in-patient care. Part 2 Clinical education - geriatric nursing, 3 HE credits Part 3 Clinical education - home care, 3 HE credits - replaceable with Part 4 Part 4 Multiprofessional clinical education (KUA), 3 HE credits - replaceable with Part 3 The placement consists of two coherent periods in geriatric care and rehabilitation and home care, where students should develop their self-reflection on their own values concerning aging and elderly's care needs, and their own attitudes to dying, in order to raise the awareness of personal and professional skills, to support the individual patient. In home care service, the student should develop his/her self-reflection on own thoughts about the implication of being nursed at home. A common theme through the placement is administrative and pedagogical leadership skills based on the student 's personal qualities to lead, organise and interact, and to be able to inspire, stimulate and support other resources. Part 4 Multiprofessional clinical education (KUA), 3 HE credits - replaceable with Part 3 In part 4, the student should work in, train and enhance his/her own professional role, by planning, carrying out, evaluating and documenting nursing in consultation with the patient, leading teams and independently be able to prioritise and distribute nursing and to carry out medical prescriptions and treatments, and in consultation with the patient and his/her family, be able to plan, carry out and evaluate teaching and meet the patient's needs of knowledge, information and health counselling.
Teaching methods
The working methods aim to integrate the field of education (nursing, medical science, social and behavioural science) and to integrate theoretical knowledge in a clinic and clinical knowledge in theory. Furthermore, the working methods aim to train a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical reflection and analysis. In this course, the following working methods are used : group exercise, lectures, seminars, literature studies, proficiency training and clinical education. In clinical education, supervision and reflection are included, individually and in groups. In part 4, seminars, literature studies, proficiency training and placement are used. In the clinical education, reflection, individually and in a group, is included . The course comprises compulsory teaching. Group exercise and placement are always compulsory, otherwise, turn to the study guide and timetable in which compulsory parts are indicated. Examination
Assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place continuously during the course. This course is examined through individual written study assignments and practical tests. Part 1 is examined through a written individual examination assignment. Part 2 is examined through a written and oral individual examination assignment and through individual follow-up of clinical skills. Part 3 is examined through a written individual examination assignment with follow-up in a seminar and through individual follow-up of clinical skills. Compulsory participation: The course comprises compulsory teaching. Group exercise and placement are always compulsory, otherwise, turn to the study guide and timetable in which compulsory parts are indicated. In case of absence from compulsory parts, see to instructions in the study guide. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination opportunities for each course. Time for examination is stated at the beginning of the course. During the placement, a continuous assessment of the students' achievements takes place. Half-time and final assessment should be conducted. Professional supervisors provide a basis for assessment according to the evaluation forms. For students at the risk of failure, a written plan should be set up, at the latest at the mid-way assessment, by the course coordinator together with a professional supervisor. The student should have satisfied the requirements of the component parts in order to get a Pass grade in the entire course. Grades are assigned by examiner. Failed clinical education may be done once more.
