Specific entry requirements

For admission to the course, it is required that the student is admitted to the Study Programme in Nursing with general entry requirements for higher education in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7 (Swedish Statute Book 1998:1003). Furthermore, 30 credits from semester one and at least 15 credits from semester two, including 4.5 credits in the course General nursing - clinical education, Part 2 - Clinical education - general nursing, 4.5 credits and 4.5 credits in the course General medicine - clinical education, Part 3 Clinical education - medical care, 4.5 credits.

Outcomes

The aim of the course is that the student should acquire knowledge in nursing theory and placement, by acquiring knowledge in observation and assessment of patients' health resources in somatic illness, and knowledge in identifying possibilities to preserve health. An additional aim is to train nursing diagnosis and nursing actions to help the patient cope with his/her life situation in an as good as possible way. Furthermore, the aim is to train nursing documentation. In part 1, on completion of the course, the student should - become aware of the application of the nursing process in somatic nursing with a special focus on nursing aims, nursing planning and nursing actions, and documentation - enhance the understanding of ADL activities, with a focus on self-treatment and pedagogical activities such as health promotion advice and support - become aware of the implication of living with a long-term disease and pain - identify and reflect on the application of nursing theories within somatic care - reflect on economical control instruments and priorities in somatic care - understand the meaning of laws and regulations related to the nurse's area of responsibility within somatic nursing - developing an awareness of nursing informatics: laws and regulations that govern documentation, quality systems, privacy, safety and qualification regulations of digital media - evaluate and respect the nurse's value and knowledge base in relation to other professions In part 2, on completion of the course, the student should - with growing independence apply individual nursing on the basis of the patient's own resources - observe and assess patients' conditions and organise, administrate, carry out and evaluate nursing in complex situations - describe and analyse ethical problem situations within somatic nursing - practice to use assessment instruments and observations and interviews in the collection of patient data - have an understanding of the living conditions of long-term patients, and the resources available in society and in voluntary organisations - identify, develop and preserve his/her own personal qualities and an awareness of the conflicts of values - practice nursing supervision and teaching methodology including group processes - get an understanding of conflict management - get an insight in different quality indicators, and formulate quality standards for nursing in somatic care - present patient situations, participate in clinical seminars and analyse and interpret nursing situations based on nursing theories - reflect on the importance of the leadership for good somatic nursing - pay attention to the importance of interaction with other professions within somatic care

Content

The course is divided in two parts: Part 1: Somatic nursing, 3 HE credits From a health theory perspective and with the nursing process as a working model for individually adapted nursing, the student practices in a systematic way to assess nursing needs and to carry out nursing actions. Likewise, the course has a focus on enhancing the knowledge in scientific methodology oriented towards various nursing theories that are used in somatic nursing research. Part 2: Clinical education - somatic nursing, 4.5 HE credits During the clinical education, consisting of a coherent period within somatic care, it is studied how the introduction of nursing theories may develop nursing , and the demands of various nursing theories on the nursing environment. The student also reflects over his/her nursing role and employee role, with a special focus on his/her own personal skills, motivation and professional knowledge as prerequisites to support patients and to be a resource in the team.

Teaching methods

The working methods aim partly to integrate the field of education (nursing, medical science, social and behavioural science), partly to integrate theoretical knowledge in a clinic, and clinical knowledge in theory. Furthermore, the working methods aim to train a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical reflection and analysis. In this course, the following working methods are used : cohort group work, seminars, literature studies. Discussion forums, proficiency training and placement. In the placement, reflection, individually and in groups, is included.

Examination

Assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place continuously during the course. Part 1 Somatic nursing is examined through an individual written examination Part 2 Clinical education - somatic nursing is examined through individual assessment of placement Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination opportunities for each course. Examination times are announced at the beginning of the course. During the clinical education, a continuous assessment of the students' achievements is conducted. Half-time and final assessment should be conducted. Professional supervisors provide a basis for assessment according to the evaluation forms. For students at the risk of failure, a written plan should be set up, at the latest at the mid-way assessment, by the course coordinator together with a professional supervisor. The student should have satisfied the requirements of the component parts in order to get a Pass grade in the entire course. Grades are assigned by examiner. Failed clinical education may be done once more.
