Specific entry requirements
For admission to the course, it is required that the student is admitted to the Study Programme in Nursing with general entry requirements for higher education in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7 (Swedish Statute Book 1998:1003). Furthermore, 30 credits from semester one and two respectively, and at least 15 credits from semester three, including 4.5 credits in the course Somatic nursing - clinical education, 7.5 credits Part 2 Clinical education - somatic nursing 4.5 credits and 4.5 credits in the course Somatic medicine - clinical education, 7.5 credits Part 2 Clinical education - somatic medicine 4.5 credits.
Outcomes
The aim of the course is for the student to enhance his/her skills in observing and assessing the patient's health resources and health obstacles, and to acquire skills to identify possibilities to preserve health. An additional aim is to train nursing diagnosis as nursing supervision to help the patient cope with his/her living conditions, as independently as possible. Furthermore, the student should acquire advanced training in nursing documentation. In part 1, the student should acquire advanced knowledge in nursing by - understanding the application of the nursing process in psychiatric care with a special focus on nursing diagnosis and nursing acts - enhancing the nursing methods in a psychiatric nursing context - developing his/her knowledge of what it means to live with anxiety - understanding the importance of meetings and continuity for the health care relation - developing his/her knowledge on ethical dilemmas and coercion in care, related to ethical theories and legal issues - reflecting on the importance of emotional theories to understand mental suffering - developing his/her ability to nurse patients in traumas and crises - getting an understanding of family-focused nursing and pedagogical methods as a support to patients and their family - identifying health risks in the patient's environment and life style, such as dependency and abuse - obtaining an understanding of quality development in psychiatric care - developing an awareness of nursing informatics: evidence-based psychiatric nursing, computer-based nursing documentation and assessment instruments - understanding the meaning of laws and regulations related to the nurse's field of responsibility in psychiatric care - understanding the importance of creative and physical activities for mental health and unhealth In part 2, the student should acquire advanced knowledge in nursing by - identifying the nursing process in psychiatric care, and carrying out nursing with preservation of the patient's own health resources - participating in the organisation, administration, implementation and evaluation of nursing - paying attention to equality, diversity and an international perspective within psychiatric nursing - participating in nursing supervision and teaching - carrying out pedagogical assignments - carrying out nursing acts, in connection with treatments such as motivational work and information - describing and analysing ethical problem situations with a focus on compulsion - understanding quality development, and formulating quality standards for psychiatric nursing - practicing to use estimation scales and making observations and interviews with a focus on the individual's resources in the collection of patient data - promoting the patient's own motivation and self-esteem as resources in the recovery - paying attention to the needs and resources of the family to get an understanding of their living environment and needs of support - becoming aware of the importance of relations and talks to the health process - paying attention to the living environment of the mentally disabled in relation to the responsibility, requirements and resources of society - studying psychiatric nursing from a health organisational as well as a social perspective - understanding the importance of leadership for good psychiatric nursing - being able to present and analyse an individual's situation from a health perspective, in a psychiatric nursing context - evaluating and respecting the nurse's basic values and knowledge in collaboration with other professions
Content
The course is divided in two parts: Part 1. Psychiatric nursing, 3 higher education credits. The patient's resources for self-treatment and autonomy in mental illness, is studied from an emotion theory perspective, and with the nursing process as a frame. Part 2. Clinical education - psychiatric nursing, 4.5 higher education credits. The clinical education consists of a coherent period in psychiatric care, where the student on the basis of a subject view on the patient, enhances and practices nursing methods; creative and developmental activities, and nursing documentation. Ethical dilemmas related to compulsion and integrity, are treated. During the placement, the student should develop his/her capacity for self-reflection on his/her own values concerning people with mental disease and his/her ability to nurse, interact with others and be a leader. Furthermore, the student should increase his/her knowledge of value conflicts and his/her own resources in conflict resolution. The whole course has focus on enhancing knowledge in scientific method with a focus on different scientific methods and different nursing theories that are used within psychiatric nursing research.
Teaching methods
The working methods aim partly to integrate the field of education (nursing, medical science, social and behavioural science), partly to integrate theoretical knowledge in a clinic, and clinical knowledge in theory. Furthermore, the working methods aim to train a scientific approach through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical reflection and analysis. In this course, the following working methods are used : lectures, group exercise, seminars, literature studies, proficiency training and clinical education. The clinical education includes supervision and reflection, individually and in groups. The course comprises compulsory teaching. Cohort group work and clinical education are always compulsory, otherwise, turn to the timetable where compulsory parts are indicated. In case of absence from compulsory parts, turn to the course director.
Examination
Assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place continuously during the course. Part 1 is examined through an individual written examination Part 2 is examined through an individual practical examination A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination opportunities for each course. Examination times are announced at the beginning of the course. During the clinical education, a continuous assessment of the students' achievements is conducted. Half-time and final assessment should be conducted. Professional supervisors provide a basis for assessment according to the evaluation forms. For students at the risk of failure, a written plan should be set up, at the latest at the mid-way assessment, by the course coordinator together with a professional supervisor. The student should have satisfied the requirements of the component parts in order to get a Pass grade in the entire course. Grades are assigned by examiner. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions A student without an approved result after three examinations can be offered to take the course once more. However, there are at most six examination opportunities for each course. The time for examination is announced at the beginning of the course. Failed clinical education may be done once more.
