Objectives

The general aims of the course are that the student should be well familiar with conventional audiological methods of measurement. Further, the students should acquire knowledge and skills in hearing assessment and hearing assessment planning, interpretation of measurement result and practical knowledge through clinical education. The student should be able to demonstrate the ability to turn theoretical facts to practical knowledge and also be able to describe, explain and analyse practical knowledge in theoretical arguments. The course constitutes basis for future courses in hearing assessment and hearing rehabilitation.

The expected learning outcomes of the course
On completion of the course, the student should:
- be able to document, interpret, compare and reflect on audiological methods of measurement and - results,
- be able to relate the measurement result to relevant hearing tests to common hearing diagnoses,
- account for and identify how different sources of errors can influence measurement results
- based on the individual's need and preconditions plan, carry out and evaluate hearing assessing measures
- independently be able to take medical history and give correct and relevant patient instructions before, and carry out tone and speech audiometry.

Content

The following part is included:

Hearing assessment, 7.5 hp The part includes theoretical starting points for tone and speech audiometry. Measurement accuracy is examined based on concepts such as reliability and validity. The course also focuses on planning and the choice of testing methods with the aim of differential diagnosing and hearing rehabilitation. The choice of an adequate test battery based on medical history and ear status, and the interpretation of measurement results, are treated. The course furthermore focuses on the meeting with the patient in the hearing health care. Placement and laboratory assignments, 4.5 hp The part focuses on practical training in audiometry, planning and application of different test batteries and interpretation of measurement result, problem-solving and critical review. The laboratory sessions include tone and speech audiometry. Otoscopy and inspection of the ear canal and training in taking medical history and to give information and instructions to the patient include in the preparations before all hearing testing. Portfolio, 3 hp The part focuses on to document a number of independent assignments that reflect both theoretical and practical parts in the course. These give training in both compilation and documentation as well as interpretation of, reflection and advanced study in audiological measurement results and patient meetings. Further, written and oral presentation is trained .

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions, self tests, exercises and clinical education. Certain parts of the teaching are compulsory. Before laboratory session may be carried out, respective self tests should be passed.

In case of absence from compulsory part, the student is responsible for contacting course coordinator for complementary assignment.

The course director assesses if, and in that case how absence from compulsory education elements can be compensated for. Before the student has participated in the compulsory parts or has replaced compulsory education, in accordance to the instructions of the course coordinator, the final study results cannot be reported.
Absence from a compulsory education element can imply that the student can not recover the occasion until next time the course be given.

Examination

Part 1: Hearing assessment, 7.5 HE credits
Written test
Written examination

Part 2: Placement and laboratory assignments, 4.5 HE credits
Placement
Clinical tests/OSCE
Active participation in laboratory sessions, exercises and seminars

Part 3: Portfolio, 3 HE credits
Assignments that are presented orally and in written form

For a Pass grade in the course, satisfactory attendance at compulsory parts is furthermore required.

For students who have not passed the regular examination, possibility for re-examination is offered at a total of six examinations, of which the three last in connection to the next occasion when the course is given. As examination, the times are counted when the student has participated in the same test. Supplementary qualification of written assignment is counted as an examination.

For students who not have become passed on the placement is offered yet another period of placement, i.e. total two periods of placement

The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical education, or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When placement is interrupted in this way it implies that the student fails on current parts and that one clinical rotation opportunity is used up.
At a failure on placement should an individual action plan be established where it appears which activities and examinations that are required before the student is given possibility to new placement in this course.

Transitional provisions

Examination can take place according to an earlier literature list during a time of one year after the date when a renewal of the literature list has been made. Examination will be provided during a time of two years after a possible close-down of the course.

Other directives

Study supervision containing assessment criteria for examination, specific instructions for certain tasks and timetable with specification of compulsory parts and list of responsible teachers will be provided. Course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines that are established by the Board of Higher Education. Course evaluation is carried out both through a written course evaluation at the end of the course and and through oral course forum at least once in connection with the course under which the students can state his opinions.
