Objectives

The general aims of the course are to give the student knowledge and understanding about the audiological rehabilitation process from technical, educational and psychological aspects. Furthermore, the concepts of professional attitude and counseling are treated in relation to psychological knowledge, self-knowledge and compassion. The student should be able to demonstrate the ability to turn theoretical facts to practical exercises, laboratory sessions and clinical education but also to be able to describe explain and analyse practical knowledge in theoretical arguments. The course builds further on the courses in hearing assessment and technical aspects of hearing aids. The course constitutes basis for future courses in hearing rehabilitation, hearing habilitation and clinical education.

The expected learning outcomes of the course

  • explain, analyse and compare different technical functions in hearing aids and how these can influence the individual's hearing situation
  • identify and choose suitable assistive listening devices based on the individual's need and preconditions
  • assess different individuals' psychological, technical and medical needs of rehabilitation and based on this argue for choice of rehabilitation actions
  • plan, carry out, document and evaluate hearing rehabilitation by both objective and subjective methods of measurement, based on the individual's need and preconditions
  • reflect on one's own patient approach and communicate with, and meet individuals with a professional attitude
  • assess the ear canal status before impressioning and carry out impressioning under supervision
  • carry out insertion gain measurements and analyse the measurement result.

Furthermore, the acoustics of the ear mold, impressioning, choice and adjustment of ear mold is treated. Teaching about cochlear implants and other technical solutions be given. Rehabilitation planning is highlighted from the interdisciplinary concept hearing rehabilitation, and teaching is given about the measures that are taken in different phases of the rehabilitation process. The course also includes medical records management and documentation. Professional attitude is focused on in relations to psychological knowledge, self-knowledge and compassion. On the basis of video recordings and observation, patient treatment is trained with the aim of becoming aware of one's own attitude and the structure of the dialogue. In connection to dialogue training, teaching on meeting people in crisis is given. Further, the course includes counseling and training in the professional conversation. Strong emphasis is placed on compliance and empathetic ability in contact with the patient. For positions concerning ethical dimensions, the audiologist's ethical code is covered in examples from every-day life. Placement and laboratory assignments, 6.5 hp The part focuses on skills that concern hearing aid fitting both as educational and conversational aspects at work. The laboratory sessions include insertion gain measurements, hearing aid prescription and impressioning and role plays with video recording and practise of counseling strategies.

Teaching methods

Lectures, self tests, laboratory sessions, workshops, seminars and clinical education. Laboratory sessions, workshops, seminars and clinical education are compulsory. Before laboratory session may be carried out, respective self tests should be passed.

In case of absence from compulsory part, the student is responsible for contacting the course director for a complementary assignment.

The course director assesses how absence from compulsory education elements can be taken again. Before the student has participated in the compulsory parts or has replaced compulsory education, in accordance to the instructions of the course director, the final study results cannot be reported.
Absence from a compulsory education element may lead to that the student can not recover the occasion until next time the course is given.

Examination

Part 1: Hearing rehabilitation 8.5 HE credits
Written examination

Part 2: Placement and laboratory assignments 6.5 HE credits
Placement
Preclinical tests
Active participation in laboratory sessions and seminars

For a Pass grade in the course, satisfactory attendance at compulsory parts is also required.

For a Pass grade in the course, attendance and active participation in compulsory parts are also required. Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. Each time the course is offered, one regular examination and two additional examinations are given. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.

For students who not have passed on the clinical education is offered another period of placement, i.e. total two periods of placement

The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical education, or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When placement is interrupted in this way it implies that the student fails on current parts and that one clinical rotation opportunity is used up.
At a failure on placement should an individual action plan be established where it appears which activities and examinations that are required before the student is given possibility to new placement in this course.
