Specific entry requirements

General admission requirements.

Objectives

The general aim of the course is that the student should acquire basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology. This knowledge is the basis for courses in medical audiology.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe the basic principles of the structure of the human body, for the cell and tissue structure, including the respiratory system, the head including its nasal cavity and sinuses and sensory organs anatomy with emphasis on the hearing organ
  • explain how the central and peripheral nervous system is organized with ascending and descending path-ways, the brain's vascular system and cranial nerves as well as identify and define neuroanatomical structures including the neoroanatomy of the linguistic functions and the central auditory system
  • explain the muscles of the abdominal and the breathing apparatus and its innervation and also for larynx, pharynx and oral cavity and its influencing muscles and nerves
  • describe the function of nerve cells and muscle cells, sensory physiology, autonomic nervous system function, motor function, and respiratory and circulatory physiology
  • describe the essential function of the speech organs and the fundamental function of the peripheral and central auditory system

Content

The course consists of two modules, Anatomy and Physiology. The course content of each module is an prerequisite for further studies on diseases and conditions which have a special connection to the auditory system as well as disorders of voice, speech, language and swallowing.

Anatomy, 2.5 hp The module includes theoretical starting points for the basic anatomy of the human body, the structures of the cells and tissues, the anatomy of the skull and the sensory organs. Further discussed the central and peripheral nervous system, the brain's vascular supply, the twelve cranial nerves, the neuro-anatomy of the linguistic functions and the anatomy of the central auditory system. Moreover the muscles of the breathing apparatus and the anatomy of the throat, pharynx and oral cavity is covered. Physiology, 2 hp The module includes teaching about the function of nerve and muscle cells, the function of the autonomic nervous system, motor function and physiology of the respiratory and circulatory system. Also included is the basic function of the speech organs and the fundamental function of the hearing system.

Teaching methods

Lectures and group exercises. Group exercises are compulsory.

In case of absence from a compulsory part, the student is responsible for contacting the course coordinator for complementary assignment.

The course coordinator decides how absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Examination

Anatomy
Physiology

Written examination

For a Pass grade in the course, attendance and active participation in compulsory parts are also required. Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. Each time the course is offered, one regular examination and two additional examinations are given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Supplementary addition to a written assignment is counted as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.

Transitional provisions

Examination may take place under the previous reading list during a period of one year after the renewal of the reading list. Examination will be provided during a period of two years after a close-down of the course.

Other directives

The course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines that are established by the Board of education. The course evaluation will be carried out both through a written course evaluation at the end of the course, and through an oral course forum at least once in connection with the course, during which the students can state their opinions.
