Scientific Methods 2 - Scientific Presentation, 3 credits

For admission to the course, it is required that the student has managed at least 45 HE credits from Semester 1-2 and a Pass grade in Part 1 and 2 from the course Hearing assessment 1.

The course is part of a scientific streak including a total of 13,5 HE credits and runs in parallel with the study programme. The aim of the scientific streak is to provide the student with knowledge about research methodology and skills in a scientific working method. The specific aim of this course - Scientific methods 2 - is to give an introduction to scientific review.

Learning outcomes of the course
On completion of the course, the student should be able to

• discuss, compare, and critically review scientific texts
• summarize science and present it in different formats
• reflect on the ethical aspects of scientific text
• formulate information to patients or subjects in a research project

The course includes basic scientific methodology with a focus on the presentation of the scientific and ethical aspects. The course comprises advanced search methods of scientific literature as well as source criticism. Different ways to summarize and present research are reviewed. Exercises in presenting scientific results in compact format, such as abstracts and posters and in addition, it is practiced how to write informative text needed for studies including human subjects. The course addresses formal procedures for ethics applications. The course provides an increased ability to critically analyze, compile, present and from an ethical perspective motivate scientific projects.

Review of selected scientific articles is carried out partly through self-studies. In addition, an introductory lecture is given on the art of summarizing science in the abstract- and poster formats. The following exercises are based on summarizing a featured article utilizing the two formats. Abstract is peer reviewed via digital forums. Posters will be presented orally by the students. A fictive ethical application should be composed with the selected article as a starting point.

Seminars are compulsory. In case of absence from a compulsory part, the student is responsible for contacting the course coordinator for complementary assignments.

The course coordinator decides how absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Active participation in seminars and presentations. An abstract, a poster and a written ethical application should be produced.

For a Pass grade in the course, attendance and active participation in compulsory parts are also required. Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. Each time the course is offered, one regular examination and two additional examinations are given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Supplementary qualification of written assignment is counted as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.

Examination may take place under the previous reading list during a period of one year after the renewal of the reading list. Examination will be provided during a period of two years after a close-down of the course.
 

The course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines that are established by the Board of education. The course evaluation will be carried out both through a written course evaluation at the end of the course, and through an oral course forum at least once in connection with the course, during which the students can state their opinions.
