Specific entry requirements

For admission to the course, it is required that the student has managed at least 105 HE credits from Semester 1-4. Furthermore, a pass mark is required in the course Hearing rehabilitation.

Objectives

The overall aim is for the student to be familiar with pediatric hearing assessment methods of and hearing habilitation. Further, the student acquire knowledge of the risk factors that lead to hearing assessment and the sources of error and ethical considerations related to auditory diagnostics and habilitation in children. The course is the basis for future course in clinical education.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the development of children in motor skills and cognition
  • Identify and describe risk factors that can lead to hearing loss in children
  • Propose test battery of hearing assessment methods for children and suggest habilitation measures
  • Describe and compare normal hearing and hearing-impaired children's language and speech development
  • In connection with auscultation able to describe and reflect on diagnostic and habilitative measures on children

Content

The course consists of two modules:

Paediatric diagnostics and habilitation, 6.0 hp

This module builds further on already received knowledge within audiology diagnostics and rehabilitation and focuses on diagnostics and habilitation in relation to the development of children. It gives an introduction to the risk factors such as syndrome, prematurity and heredity that lead to hearing evaluation. The teaching includes diagnostic methods on children, including screening audiometry; further including sources of errors and measurement accuracy in connection with the measuring situation . The teaching also includes hearing habilitation in teams and the importance of family intervention is emphasised. Ethical issues regarding communication with children and parents about hearing injuries in children are discussed.

Clinical auscultation, 1.5 hp

This module focuses on clinical observation in audiometry and habilitation in children.

Teaching methods

Lectures, method excercise seminars and clinical observation.

Seminars, method exercise and clinical observation are compulsory. In case of absence from a compulsory part, the student is responsible for contacting the course coordinator for complementary assignment.

The course coordinator decides how absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Examination

Diagnostics and habilitation of children, 6 credits
An individual take-home examination
Oral seminar

Clinical observation, 1.5 credits
Written individual assignment

For a Pass grade in the course, attendance and active participation in compulsory parts are also required. Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. Each time the course is offered, one regular examination and two additional examinations are given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Supplementary addition to a written assignment is counted as one examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.
 

Transitional provisions

Examination may take place under the previous reading list during a period of one year after the renewal of the reading list. Examination will be provided during a period of two years after a close-down of the course.
 

Other directives

The course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines that are established by the Board of education. The course evaluation will be carried out both through a written course evaluation at the end of the course, and through an oral course forum at least once in connection with the course, during which the students can state their opinions.
