Specific entry requirements

Physical Education 1, Mathematics 2a or 2b or 2c, Natural Sciences 2, Social Sciences 1b or 1a1+1a2.

Objectives

The course should lay the foundation to professional identity and professional attitude in physical therapy as well as create preconditions for learning and development individually and in groups.

Learning outcomes
At completion of the course the student should:

  • Be familiar with physiotherapy as a science and profession and reason about the role of the physiotherapist in relation to health and evidence based practice.
  • Be familiar with central concepts in  physiotherapy and based on it discuss factors that influence the relationship between movement, functioning and health, including human rights and sustainable development.
  • Be able to discuss  own attitude in relation to patient encounters, ethics and communication
  • Apply pedagogical tools such as portfolio, reflection and feedback and understand the importance of the group process for cooperation

Content

  • Physical therapy as subject and profession; History and development
  • Basic theories and models for physical therapy and health
  • Roles, areas of work and working methods in physical therapy
  • Professional attitude: treatment, ethical guidelines, communication.
  • Literature search, professional language, formalities and reference management
  • Group processes and cooperation intra and interprofessionally
  • Pedagogical tools such as portfolio, reflection and feedback
  • Introduction to  the learning management system

Teaching methods

The teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning in which the tasks provide opportunities for the student to take active responsibility for their learning. The working methods that are used are lectures, seminars individual work and group assignment. Part of the teaching will also take place interactively via the learning management system.

Compulsory course elements are:

  • Active participation in seminars.
  • Create directories to portfolio
  • Written reflective assignments

The course leader decides if and how students can make up for absence from compulsory course elements. Before the student has completed compulsory course elements or recovered absence in accordance with the instructions the learning outcomes cannot be reported. Absence from a compulsory course element can imply that the student cannot recover the occasion until next time the course is offered.

Examination

The course is examined according to the following:

  • Written assignments and an oral seminar

To achieve the grade Pass for the whole course, completed and submitted course assignments are required.

In case of failure of the regular examination, the student is given the opportunity to re-take one examination during the same semester. Thereafter, the student is given the possibility to take an examination at two occasions each semester in connection with regular and retake opportunity, in future semesters. If the student has missed out on the oral seminar it may be substituted with a written assignment

Student who has not passed after the regular examination has a right to retake another five examinations. If the student has carried out six failed examinations/no additional examination will be given. An examination is defined as the number of times that the student has participated in one and the same test. An examination to which the student has registered but not participated in is to be counted as no examination.

Transitional provisions

An examination will be made available for a period of one year in the event of the course being discontinued or a new course syllabus being devised.

Other directives

Course evaluation and course analysis are carried out according to the guidelines that are established by the Board of education.

The course credits may not be included in the qualification of another concurrent passed course, which contents completely or partly corresponds to the course content.
