Specific entry requirements

To start the course Medical subjects 2, 7.5 credits, should all courses from semester 1 and 2 be approved.

Objectives

The course aims to make the students acquire knowledge, analyze and relate to common clinical conditions in rehabilitation medicine, general medicine, geriatrics, gynecology, gender medicine, pediatrics and psychiatry. The course relates to the general intended learning outcomes for the whole study programme in Physiotherapy After the course, the students should have acquired a good basis in medical subjects.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • Identify, name and describe common clinical conditions
  • Account for and argue for and against different treatment options in common clinical conditions related to the different subject areas
  • Relate to the described diseases and account for adequate physiotherapy decisions and efforts at these conditions.
  • Understand and be able to use a biopsychosocial attitude
  • Make realistic holistic, individual rehabilitation plans based on complex situations
  • Understand and be able to account for basics of a work capacity assessment.
  • Understand the importance of cultural aspects and a gender perspective within health care.

Content

The course is given in collaboration between the following subject areas: Rehabilitation Medicine 3 credits, Geriatrics 1.5 credits, General medicine 0.75 credits, pediatrics 0.75 credits, psychiatry 0.75 credits, gynecology 0.375 credits and Gender Medicine 0.375 credits.


Rehabilitation Medicine
The main contents treat evidence-based methods for rehabilitation of patients with disabilities that can arise at brain damage, symptoms after polio, long-term pain and stress-related illness. The course provides a bio-psycho-social approach and provides individualized holistic knowledge and tools for working with a perspective, where social aspects are included.
The course provides basic knowledge for being able to make realistic, holistic, individual rehabilitation plans, including rehabilitation to the work life of patients in working age after: Traumatic brain damage or stroke, symptoms after polio, long-term pain condition and stress related symptoms.


Geriatrics
The main contents comprise definition of geriatrics as a subject, symptom picture and common medical conditions in the aging patient, drugs and elderly, the importance of nutrition, adapted physical training, fall and fall prevention. Further, the prevalence, incidence, risk and health factors of dementia diseases are treated, and treatment, the occurrence of motor disorders, and strategies for motion stimulation and treatment.


Family medicine
The main contents treat how assessment of the patient's description of symptoms is made based on individual criteria as well as based on structures of the family situation, cultural background and the migration process. The course puts the patient's description of symptoms in relation to the relativity of the disease concept and popular disease concept. The course communicates basic knowledge in how individual rehabilitation plans can be established based on patients' complex reality and to bridge language and cultural borders.


Pediatrics
The main contents consist of clinic, diagnostics and treatment of mainly neuro pediatric conditions such as cerebral paresis, spina bifida, neuromuscular diseases and neurological developmental aberrations. An orientation is given around perinatal risk factors and its consequences.


Psychiatry
The main contents consist of; diagnostics and treatment of common psychiatric diseases and disorders such as depression syndromes, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and other psychotic syndromes, somatoform syndromes and personality disorders. A basic understanding of both the interaction between mental and somatic dysfunction and the multi-factorial background of most mental diseases is emphasized.


Gynecology
The main contents are diagnostics and treatment of the most common gynecological diseases and differential diagnoses. Part of the time is devoted to physiological changes during pregnancy and the gynecological endocrinology; the menstrual cycle, disorders in this and their consequences. Also the man's reproduction hormones are treated, as well as consequences of hormone doping.


Gender Medicine
The main contents are constituted by a general introduction to what neurosurgical nursing is and its importance for the whole nursing chain. A gender perspective on heart-disease concerning occurrence, symptoms, diagnostics, treatments and prognosis is provided.

Teaching methods

The teaching mainly consists of lectures mixed with patient demonstrations and group assignments.

Examination

The course is examined according to the following:
Written examination with short-answer questions. The questions are based on patient case, where the ability to identify and describe clinical conditions based on knowledge that is acquired during the course is tested. The questions relate to the respective subject area.

To receive the grade Pass course is required that the pass level in all subjects has been achieved.




Compulsory Components are included. Information about complementary assignment is given by Course Coordinator about attendance at compulsory components is not possible.

In case of failure in the regular examination, the student is given the opportunity to return to a make-up examination during the same semester. Thereafter, the student is given the possibility to be taken an examination at two occasions each semester in connection with regular and retake opportunity, the future semesters. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given.

Transitional provisions

An examination will be made available for a period of one year in the event of the course being discontinued or a new course syllabus being devised.

Other directives

Course evaluation is carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of Education at KI, and based on established evaluation routines in the programme.
