Specific entry requirements
University Diploma in Dental Hygiene equivalent to 120 credits (80 credits) Students who have failed the placement (VFU) or the equivalent as a consequence of demonstrating deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude so serious that the patient's safety or confidence in healthcare have been at risk is qualified for new placement only when the individual action plan has been completed.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should independently: be able to analyse and plan preventive care and treatment of the aging patient, be able to carry out risk and prognosis assessments of patients with caries and periodontitis, be able to carry out tobacco-preventive work, understand and be able to evaluate the importance of oral health for the general well-being, be able to prepare material, lecture to and inform children, preschool staff and parents, and other groups in society, be able to carry out tasks in the dental hygienist's competence domain, in cooperation with other professions be able to plan and carry out treatment of patients with serious periodontal and cariologic diseases
Content
The course provides advanced knowledge in the main field of study Dental prophylaxis with special emphasis on serious periodontal and cariologic diseases. The course also focuses on how preventive measures can be disseminated in the society. Odontological prophylaxis, theory (Odontological prophylaxis, theory) 5.5 credits The part Odontological prophylaxis theory, focuses on knowledge in the area of gerodontics and the aging the patient's specific needs of preventive care and treatment. The course provides knowledge how to carry out risk and prognosis assessments of patients with caries and periodontitis, and knowledge of our national diseases and the relationship with oral disease. During the course, knowledge of tobacco-preventive work is provided. The course furthermore provides knowledge and training to carry out information and lectures to different groups in society and to cooperate with other professional groups in the care. Odontological prophylaxis, clinical study (Odontological prophylaxis, clinical study) 5 credits The part Odontological prophylaxis, clinical study includes treatment of patients with serious periodontal and cariologic diseases. The course also includes implementing tobacco cessation in connection with patient treatment.
Teaching methods
Tuition forms during the course are lectures, seminars, group exercises, attendance as an observer, clinical studies and own studies. Current research is discussed at lectures and seminars. The course comprises full-time studies.
Examination
Examination forms for the different parts: Odontological prophylaxis, theory The assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place through a written final examination. Compulsory attendance and active participation in seminars, group exercises and attendance as observer. In case of absence, assignments that compensate the absence are provided. Odontological prophylaxis, clinical study An assessment of the student's achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place during the course through: an integrated part of the clinical education and through demonstration of clinical skills in a final clinical examination. All clinical parts are compulsory. Absence from compulsory clinical parts is made up by the student himself/herself booking the corresponding number of clinic-based sessions, when access to a supervisor and clinic-based sessions is available. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions Students who are not approved after the regular examination are entitled to two more examinations. If the student is not approved after three examinations, he/she is recommended to retake the course at the next regular course date, before three more examinations are offered. If the student has failed six examinations, no additional examination or new admission to the current course is given. The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's placement (VFU), or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When a placement is interrupted like this, it implies that the student fails in the current part, and that a placement opportunity is used. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up showing which activities and examinations are required, before the student is given the possibility of a new placement in this course.
