Specific entry requirements

Passed results of at least 45 higher education credits from The Optometry program semester 1 and 2.

Objectives

After the course, the student should:

1. have general knowledge of what a drug is, how drugs can be administered, what drugs do to the body, what the body does to drugs, and how drugs are metabolised and eliminated.

2. Have general knowledge of neurotransmission in the central and peripheral nervous system and how drugs can interact with this

3. have theoretical knowledge and certain practical experience of how certain drugs may influence the functions of the eye.

4. have good theoretical knowledge on the treatment of glaucoma

5. Have general knowledge of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, and knowledge how to treat inflammation and infection in the eye

Content

Whole-group lectures on general pharmacology, receptor pharmacology and neurotransmission, lectures on pharmacological treatment of allergies and infections, glaucoma. A laboratory session where the students test the effects of various pharmaceuticals in the eyes and a group exercise with enhancing questions around the lectures.

Plenary lectures, group exercise, laboratory session, examination.

Examination

The examination comprises written/oral examination and attendance in compulsory parts.

Criteria for assessing examinations and compulsory attendance are established in a separate document.

Students who have not passed the regular examination are entitled to participate in five more examinations. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination or new admission is provided. The number of times that the student has participated in one and the same examination is regarded as an examination session. Submission of a blank examination is regarded as an examination. An examination for which the student registered but not participated in, will not be counted as an examination.

Transitional provisions

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, students who have not completed the course are given the possibility, during four semesters from the date when the student first registered in the course, to be examined under the then current syllabus After four semesters, the student is examined under the new syllabus.

Other directives

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
