Objectives

After the course, the student should:

- account for basic structural cell, tissue and organ changes in various diseases, and their cause, development and functional/clinical significance.

Content

During the course, the interplay between abnormal morphology and abnormal function at various levels will be highlighted. The course can thus increase the understanding of how diseases affect different organ functions, how this gives rise to symptoms and other clinical findings, how medical and surgical treatment methods attempt to restore normal organ function. This knowledge gives a rational background to preventive measures, diagnostics and treatment.

Teaching methods

The course comprises whole-group lectures, demonstration of the routine work of the pathologist, and a autopsy demonstration.
The lecture section starts with a section General pathology in which cell lesions, general tumour theory tumour theory, circulatory disorders and inflammation are treated. The rest of the course comprises organ-specific pathology and constitutes the application of general pathology to different organs and their diseases.

Examination

The examination comprises examination at the end of the course. For admission to the examination, passed compulsory participation in the demonstration of the pathologist's routine work, and autopsy demonstration are required. In case of absence from compulsory parts, measures are discussed with the course director.

Students who have not passed the regular examination are entitled to participate in five more examinations. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination or new admission is provided. The number of times that the student has participated in one and the same examination is regarded as an examination session. Submission of a blank examination is regarded as an examination. An examination for which the student registered but not participated in, will not be counted as an examination..

Transitional provisions

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, students who have not completed the course will have the possibility, during four semesters from the date when the student first registered in the course to be examined under the then current syllabus After four semesters, the student is examined under the new syllabus.

Other directives

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.

The teaching language is Swedish but parts of the course may be given in English.
