Specific entry requirements
At least 30 credits from an undergraduate programme within the medical faculty are required.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - understand basic research methodology - apply the above knowledge in practice through research in any field of research at Karolinska Institutet
Content
The course starts with an introduction to the theory of science, laboratory animal science, ethics in research, information retrieval, research conditions, doctoral studies and various medical research fields during a week. After this introductory week, the students participate during 5-6 weeks in the summer (during a period as agreed by the student and the supervisor) in a supervised research project at one of the departments of KI or the departments of the partner universities. Approximately, one of the six weeks should be devoted to report writing and the production of a poster.
Teaching methods
During the introduction week, teaching takes place in the form of lectures and group assignments. The remaining part of the course is taught through a practical supervised project work.
Examination
Written and oral presentation of the course project in the form of a poster presentation and a written report. Compulsory participation: The introduction week. Supervised research project 5-6 weeks at a department within KI or some of KI's partner universities within the national graduate school of health care. Project presentation. In case of absence from the introduction week and/or the project presentation, a complementary assignment may be done on the basis of the reading list.
Other directives
The course is open only to students in one of KI's beginner programs. Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
