Physiology - an introductory course, 7.5 credits

The course aim is to introduce the subject physiology with a focus on the healthy human body functions. The course also aims at stimulating a scientific attitude.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe basic anatomic structures and use anatomic terminology in the major organ systems
- understand and describe the general functions in:
- the single cell, the tissues and the musculoskeletal system
- the nervous system and the sensory organs
- the heart and the blood circulation
- the respiratory system
- the kidneys
- the hormone system
- the digestive tract
- the reproduction system
- the immune system
- the body at work and changes in the surrounding environment

Skills and ability
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- carry out pulse - and blood pressure measurement
- account for spirometry measurements
- orally and in writing account for a chosen assignment and relate the contents to a physiological context

Assessment ability and attitudes
The student should after the overview be able to:
- identify appropriate scientific literature for a chosen subject, know what is meant with scientific approach.

The course gives an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. The following topics are covered:
- the independent cell, the tissues and the musculoskeletal system
- the nervous system and the sensory organs
- the heart and the blood circulation
- the respiratory system
- the kidneys
- the hormone system
- the digestive tract
- the reproduction
- the immune system
- the body at work and changes in the surrounding environment

Lectures, practical laboratory sessions, group assignment with oral and written presentation.

Individual written assignment and group assignment that is presented orally and in writing.
In case of absence from or failed at oral presentation, a complementary assignment will be given.

A student who has failed in the regular examination, is entitled to participate in five more examination sessions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no more examination session is offered.

Examination will be provided during a period of two years after a close-down of the course. Examination may take place under a previous reading list during a period of one year after the date of the renewal of the reading list.

Course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.

Language of instruction: Swedish.
