Specific entry requirements

A minimum of 120 credits is required in health or social care. English language skills equivalent to English B at Swedish upper secondary school are also required.

Proficiency in the English language should be documented by an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL: internet based (iBT) with a total score of at least 90 and minimum score of 20 on written test; paper based (PBT) with a total score of at least 575, and minimum score 4.5 on written test; or IELTS (academic) with an overall mark of at least 6.5 and no band less than 5.5; or other documentation that according to regulations certifies the equivalence of English B at Swedish upper secondary school.

Objectives

Aim
Community and Home Based Rehabilitation seeks to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to rehabilitation and other services and opportunities - health, education and income - as do all other members of society.

The overall aim of this Interprofessional Course in Community and Home Based Rehabilitation is to provide the students with knowledge about theoretical frameworks as well as practical tools in how to design, implement and assess the effects of interventions and technology in the home and community care.

Learning outcomes
Part 1
Knowledge in current definitions of Community – and Home Based Rehabilitation. Skills to describe (the relevance of place) as a key component in the integration of care in a global context, focusing on home assessment, neighbourhood and community. This will include identification and description of demographics of the population and how the health care system and the provision of care in the home and the community are provided.
Knowledge and skills in demonstrating the complexity of formal and informal care in Swedish context in comparison with the population in a global context and also to identify and describe inter-disciplinary and cross-national perspectives on subjective and objective aspects of housing and health in the span of all ages.

Part 2
Knowledge in different kinds of assessments, interventions, and evaluations relevant for community-based rehabilitation involving environmental measures such as housing adaptations and assistive technology. Skills to identify, present and discuss ethical and cultural dilemmas in relation to home and community care.

Content

Part 1: Basic aspects of Community and Home Based Rehabilitation, 3 credits
* Definitions of Community and Home Based Rehabilitation. Identification and description of how the health care system and the provision of care in the home and the community and demographics of the population are provided.
* Home assessment, assessment of neighbourhood and community.
* Learning about formal and informal care in Swedish context in comparison with the population in a global context.
* Learning about inter-disciplinary and cross-national perspectives on subjective and objective aspects of housing and health in the span of all ages.

Part 2: Assessments and interventions related to Community and Home Based Rehabilitation, 4.5 credits
* Learning about different kinds of assessments, interventions, and evaluations relevant for community-based rehabilitation involving environmental measures such as housing adaptations and assistive technology- interventions that make it possible to work and use your leisure time well.
* Learning about ethical and cultural dilemmas in relation to home and community care.

Teaching methods

Different kinds of ways of teaching will be used as lectures, workshops, individual work, group seminar on literature reviews, pilot studies and case studies.

Examination

Part 1
A group examination, (maximum 3 in each group).
Every student in the group select articles to study, the articles will be presented in the group. At the exam the group will present their conclusion of the readings in which they have applied the CBR perspective.

The students shall define the concepts of CBR and make an overview of health and social care systems from a global perspective in home countries by using the Millenium Development Goals for respective countries as a framework .

The group shall also analyse and describe how the developments of the population in the world look like from an socio-economical and political perspective regarding consequencies for CBR.

The Presentation will be oral at an examination seminar. Grading scale: Pass/No pass.

Part 2
An individual examination.
The students shall individually describe how housing and assistive technology look like as part of the rehabilitation process in their home country and specifically include the availability of resources and limitations depending on policies (laws and regulations) from the home country.

The students will present this as a family case history including different ethical and cultural dilemmas in the home and community care related to occupational therapy, physiotherapy, medical and/or nursing literature.

The student will be examined through an individual written exam. Grading Scale: Pass with honour/Pass/No Pass

To get a pass with honour of the whole course the student has to have pass on part 1 and a pass with honour on part 2.

There will be 5 opportunities to take the exam again if you don't pass the first time.

Transitional provisions

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the spring semester of 2012. 

Other directives

Evaluation of the course will be realized according to the guidelines established from the Board of Higher Education. The report of the course-evaluation and an analysis of the result will be published on the course webb-site after the evaluation is finished.
