Specific entry requirements

150 HE credits from The Study Programme in Radiography (all courses on semester 1-5) and the course Scientific theory and method, 7.5 HE credits.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • be able to delimit and formulate a research problem in the area of radiography that is relevant to the profession exercise as radiographer
  • under supervision be able to describe research design and method in relation to chosen problem
  • under supervision be able to search, review critically, compare, analyse and summarise scientific literature within radiography in writing
  • under supervision, based on analysis and interpretation in written form compile data in relation to problem and with a scientific language that is used in the area of radiography
  • to demonstrate critical, self-critical and reflective approach in relation to their own and others' scientific questions at the presentation of the paper
  • in connection with own the seminar discussion of the essay be able to summarise and account for the parts of the essay by means of a powerpoint presentation
  • show ability to understand current research-ethical rules and follow good research practice
  • show ability to identify his need of additional knowledge and to develop his skills.

Content

At the beginning of the course, the students choose topics within the main field of study radiography. These topics can for example be:

  • Method development of different radiographic examination methods and interventions
  • Optimisation - and radiation protection aspects at radiographic studies and treatments
  • Aspects of patient experiences and patient information
  • Studies of changes within the radiography

By means of the different parts of the research process and from guidelines for degree project the student describes a problem area within radiography and an aim of his study. This is then answered through established scientific data collection - and the methods of analysis and are compiled in an academic paper.

In the course is included also to present his degree project at an open seminar and that also alone be able to receive understand and objective counter critical review on the own the degree project. Furthermore to analyse and assess other student's degree project critically.

Teaching methods

The supervision is carried out in group seminars with of the department appointed supervisor. The group seminars contain occasion to discussion about progress, setbacks, follow up of the writing process etc. Certain of these seminars may be compulsory. In addition to these group seminars be given also possibility to independent supervision.
The completed thesis work is presented and ventilated under a final seminar with student reviewer and examiner. Participation in essay seminars implies actively participation attendance at others' essay seminars and to object on another academic paper.

Examination

Achieved learning objectives are examined through presentation of the essay on an essay seminar where the essay, respondentships and critical oral reviews are evaluated of examiner.
The following grade can be given on respective part:
a) Written essay can receive the grades Failed, Passed or passed with distinction
b) Respondentships (defence and discussion of essay) can receive the grades failed or Passed
c) Present and summarise the own essay under about 20 minutes in Swedish with support in a powerpoint presentation. The presentation can receive the grades failed or Passed.
d) Oppositions on other essay can receive the grades failed or Passed

The seminar is an occasion for feedback. Possibility to supplement is given after the seminar. When final version is submitted to examiner, grades are informed on the essay.

Grades on all course
For the grade passed on whole course is required Accepted on all four parts above (a, b, c and d) and participation on the final seminar days. To pass with distinction is required in addition to this also the grade passed with distinction on (a) i.e. the written essay.

At failed author of the thesis - or critical oral reviews (and at fail to appear attendance) can written supplementary assignments be required of examiner. Failed degree project should be revised and assessed on new through renewed examination at a later occasion as agreed with supervisor and examiner. At failed presentation, a list is obtained on what that should is remedied before a new presentation that is informed after the seminar. Submission date for revised essay follow dates for prevalent re-examinations during the semester.

Transitional provisions

The student has the opportunity to be examined been taken according to earlier course syllabus within a year after the date after decision that the course is placed down or goes through larger changes.

Other directives

Evaluation of the course will be carried out according to the guidelines that are established by the Board of Education at Karolinska Institutet.
