Specific entry requirements

To be qualified to a higher semester, it is required that the student has taken at least 15 credits from last semester. Students who have failed the placement (VFU) or the equivalent as a consequence of demonstrating deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude so serious that the patient's safety or confidence in healthcare have been at risk is qualified for new placement only when the individual action plan has been completed.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - account for the meaning of the Health and Medical Services Act and the Medical Records Act and regulations that govern the nurse's working method - practically carry out medical technical measures - identify, carry out and evaluate the effects of basic nursing - describe causes to and prevent complications of bed rest - account for and carry out drug prescriptions under supervision - apply measures to prevent disease transmission

Content

The course starts with laws and regulations that regulate the health care and the nurse's working method. Focus is here on the meaning of the Health and Medical Services Act and the Medical Records Act. During the course, the following medical engineering actions are practiced: pulse - and blood pressure measurement, venous sampling and insertion of peripheral vein catheter and handling and maintenance of peripheral vein catheter. The course also contains an overview of different administration routes such as subcutaneous - and intramuscular injection and intravenous infusions. During the placement, the student is trained to use the nursing process and identify, carry out and evaluate basic nursing actions. Furthermore, the student should apply hygienic principles in nursing in order to prevent infections and contamination. During this part, the student should apply ergonomic principles in nursing in order to prevent occupational injuries. Further, effects of prescriptions, simple treatments and studies should be evaluated. The student also carries out different forms of calculations and administration of drugs.

Teaching methods

The studies are characterised by the students' active knowledge acquisition, reflection and critical attitudes. During two course weeks, placement under supervision of a nurse is carried out. Clinical education takes place within somatic care, at a medical or surgical ward unit The course also includes of campus-located teaching consisting of proficiency training, seminars and lectures.

Examination

Assessment of the students' learning and achievement takes place continuously during the course. The course is examined through an individual written assignment and practical tests and approved clinical education. The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's placement (VFU), or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When a placement is interrupted like this, it implies that the student fails in the current part, and that a placement opportunity is used. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up showing which activities and examinations are required, before the student is given the possibility of a new placement in this course.

Transitional provisions

The student may be examined under a previous syllabus within a year after the date when a close-down or major changes of the course was decided.

Other directives

Course evaluation is carried out orally and in writing, individually, the compilation is delegated both to students and representatives of concerned units.
