Nursing Care for people with acute illness and diseases, 7.5 credits

Admission to semester 5:
All courses from semesters 1-3
Semester 4: Passed assessment from placement 9 credits + 7.5 credits in (1SJ006, 1SJ005)

A student who has failed his or her clinical placement or its equivalent due to serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes such that patient safety or patients' trust in health care or community care has been jeopardised, is qualified for a new clinical placement only when the student's individual action plan has been completed.

The course's general aim is that students develop develop readiness to give person-oriented nursing to people who are nursed in emergency care settings, working from central nursing concepts of the person, nursing care, the nursing relationship, health and environment develop knowledge and skills to assess, analyse, prioritise, implement and evaluate patients' individual nursing needs in emergency care situations

Expected learning outcomes:

Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- analyse and explain principles of supervision, care and nursing of patients with signs of acute illness
- describe principles of assessment and priority in emergency care.
-demonstrate an understanding of the aims and functions of medical technological equipment and demonstrate an ability to use this equipment safely in emergency care settings

Skills and ability
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- analyse and apply structured principles of care and supervision of patients with failure or threatened failure of vital functions
- identify and explain the information and psychological support needs of patients' and their families' in emergency care settings
- communicate information about a patient's condition and care both in writing and orally to other healthcare providers in the chain of care
- plan, prioritise, implement and evaluate care in collaboration with different professional groups (teamwork)
- show nursing readiness in connection with acute illness conditions

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

The teaching methods aim to instill in students a scientific approach to emergency nursing care through active knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, critical analysis and reflection.

The course is based on the following pedagogical methods: clinical placement, lectures, proficiency training. literature studies, seminars, simulations and written study assignments.

The course is web-based and based on the full-time equivalent of 40 hours a week. The course has 3-4 compulsory sessions that take place on KI Campus Huddinge or at a clinical training center in SLL. These campus sessions will when possible be scheduled for adjoining days. Outside of the campus sessions the course will take place via a digital learning platform and include written assignments, examinations, virtual discussions, etc. It is therefore required of each student that they have basic computer knowledge as well as access to a computer with an internet connection.

The clinical placement takes place over 2 weeks in an emergency care setting where registered nurses work ("emergency care" is defined in this course in accordance with the Riksföreningen for emergency nurses and Swedish sjuksköterskeförenings (2010) definition of in-hospital emergency care: the care and nursing that is given to patient in the first 24 hours at an emergency department, emergency care ward or the equivalent. Placement include 40/hours a week of which approximately 32 hours/week are located in a nursing care setting. Day, evening, night and weekend occur as well as also red days where appropriate. Students are not allowed to shorten the clinical placement.

Assessment of the students' learning and achievements takes place continuously during the course.

The course is assessed through an individual written case-based examination.

Participation in study assignments, clinical training simulations, proficiency training and the clinical placement is compulsory. If a student is absent from compulsory course modules, the student should contact the course coordinator.

For a grade of Pass a student must demonstrate achievement of all the course learning outcomes by achieveing a passing grade on the examination as well as by actively participating in compulsory components of the course. To pass with distinction requires a passed with distinction result on the examination as well as active participation in compulsory components of the course. Grades are assigned by the examiner.

Students who do not pass the regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. A student who has not achieved a passing grade after taking the examination three times can take parts of the course or the whole course again Being able to retake all or parts of the course is subject to availability

If the student has failed six examinations no additional examination is given.
Submission of blank exam is counted as an examination. If a student has registered for an examination it is counted as an examination, even if the student has not participated. An examination that has been opened via the learning management system counts as an examination session even if the examination is not submitted.

Examinations that are submitted late will not be accepted. Students who have not submitted on time are referred to the next examination session.
The examiner may with immediate effect end a student's clinical placement, or the equivalent, if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. f a student's clinical placement is ended by the course examiner then the student has failed this course component and used up his or her first (of two) possibilities to complete the clinical placement. In such cases, an individual action plan should be established, describing all activities and examinations that are required before the student is given one more, final clinical placement opportunity
A failed clinical placement can be repeated only once.

The course has been cancelled and was offered for the last time in the spring semester of 2019. Examination will be provided until the spring semester of 2023 for students who have not completed the course

The course evaluation will be conducted according to the guidelines that are established by the Board of Higher Education.
