Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should: - be able to register the clinical findings in the medical record that constitutes basis for diagnostics and treatment planning - be able to inform about the disease progression at gingival inflammation and periodontitis and account for the caries process - be able to give individual and adequate oral hygiene instructions and carry out professional oral hygiene treatment - be able to current rules for hygiene and disease control - be able to apply current laws and regulations at establishment of medical records.

Content

The course introduces the student in dental prophylaxis with a specialisation in clinical cariology and periodontology. The main contents in the course consists of clinical registrations, diagnostics and treatment planning and introduction to the dental care process. The course focuses on the importance of the oral hygiene in the mouth and preventive of caries and periodontitis. The course emphasis the section about hygiene and disease control and establishment of correct medical records.

Teaching methods

The tuition forms are constituted by lectures, seminars, demonstrations, group work, pre-clinical exercises, clinical fellow student excercises and auscultations in the Public dental care. The teaching focuses on fellow student excercises in the area of patient communication with a specialisation in patient education and professional oral hygiene treatment.

Examination

Assessment of the student's achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place during the course through presentation of clinical skills at clinical examination and through written examination. The course requires attendance and active participation in demonstrations, seminars and group work in the clinic. Absence at clinical parts is compensated by the student alone book equivalent number of clinic-based sessions then access to supervisor and clinic-based duty is. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions Students who have not passed the regular examination/assessment session are entitled to two more examinations. If the student is not approved after three examinations, he/she is recommended to retake the course at the next regular opportunity before three more examination opportunities are given. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination or new admission to the course is given. The examiner may with immediate effect interrupt a student's clinical proficiency training if the student demonstrates such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk. When the clinical proficiency training is interrupted like this, it implies that the student fails in the clinical part of the course. In such cases, an individual action plan should be set up, where it comes clear which activities and examinations are required before the student is given the possibility to clinical proficiency training in this course. Students who have failed the clinical proficiency training as a consequence of demonstrating deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes so serious that patient safety or patient confidence in healthcare is at risk are qualified for resuming the clinical proficiency training only when the individual action plan has been completed.
