Specific entry requirements

For admission to the course, it is required that at least 20 credits from semester 1 are passed.

Objectives

The course consists of two modules:
 
Module 1: Odontological Prophylaxis, 8 credits
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. From a disciplinary foundation explain the inflammatory process at gingivitis and periodontitis and its influence on the general condition.
2. Describe theoretically how tobacco can influence oral tissues.
3. Explain evidence-based non-surgical treatment and its importance for the periodontal health
4. Describe the mineralization, composition, structure and effect on the periodontal health of the calculus.
5. From a disciplinary foundation account for the bare root surface, pathology pathogenesis and aetiology and for the aetiology, diagnostics, treatment and prevention of the root caries and how dental hyper sensitivity can influence the individual's general well-being.
6. Describe different hand instruments used for mechanical treatment of infections and their fields of use theoretically.
7. Explain and understand the importance of an ergonomic working method.
8. Explain and understand the importance of an empathetic and professional attitude in talk with patients about oral health. 

Module 2: Science in Odontological Profylaxis, 4 credits
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Review scientific articles regarding structure, content and ethical aspects, but also consider their usefulness for the individual and the society.
2. Describe the evidence of different clinical indices that are used for diagnostics of periodontal tissues and dental caries lesions.
3. Describe different oral hygiene products regarding their use and effect, based on scientific evidence.

Content

The course treats the profession of the dental hygienist and develop additional perspectives from the courses Odontological prophylaxis 1 and 2.

Odontological Prophylaxis, 8 hp The module consists of:
  • The inflammatory process of gingivitis and periodontitis and the influence of tobacco on oral tissues.
  • Non-surgical periodontal treatment methods in regards to planning, performing and expected results.
  • The problems with the uncovered root surface and  dental erosion with a focus on life style factors, from medical, psychological, social, and sociatal aspects.
  • Communication between student and patient based on and in consideration of the patient's whole life environment.
  • Ergonomic working method from the work situation of the dental hygienist.
Science in Odontological Profylaxis, 4 hp The module consists of:
  • Review of scientific articles in regards to content and structure.
  • Identifying methods and scientific concepts within research.
  • Evidence for different examinations of periodontal tissues and dental caries, as well as counseling of oral hygiene procedures and their significance for the individual and society.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and group exercises.

To acquire necessary knowledge, compulsory attendance at all course elements applies.

The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.

Examination

Module 1: Odontological Prophylaxis, 8 credits
Written examination, individually written assignment and oral presentation in seminars.
 
Module 2: Science in Odontological Profylaxis, 4 credits
Written examination, assignment in groups and oral presentation in seminars.
 
The following applies to both modules:
For a Pass grade, attendance at compulsory course elements is also required.

Limitation of number test- or practical training sessions
Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.

Transitional provisions

If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/close-down.

The course evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
