Objectives
Module: Man and Society, 2 credits
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe psychological and ethical aspects of dental and medical treatment and evaluate their consequences.
2. Reflect on communication patterns between different health care providers and between health care providers and patients in a multicultural society.
3. Describe the domains of the different professions within dental care and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of teamwork and cooperation.
Module: Introduction to Odontological Prophylaxis, 9,5 credits
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
4. Describe differences between oral tissues during a healthy state and during illness.
5. Explain how the oral biofilm is formed, explain the relationship between microorganisms and the inflammatory process in periodontal tissue, as well as the link between inflammation and general diseases.
6. Describe the aetiology in gingival inflammation.
7. Describe the basic aetiology in periodontitis.
8. Be familiar with the aetiology, diagnostics, treatment and prevention of dental caries.
9. Describe oral hygiene aids and methods for an individually adjusted self-treatment starting from dental national guidelines.
10. Explain and understand the importance of self-treatment for oral health.
11. Describe the importance of an empathetic and professional attitude towards the patient
12. Follow and understand the importance of the laws and regulations that govern health care including dental care.
13. Deskribe basic hygiene routines and clothing regulations.
14. Describe the profession of the dental hygienist and its professional ethical rules.
15. Identify the relevant concepts, theories and methods of scientific research and understand the importance of a scientific approach.
Content
The course consists of the modules Man and Society and Introduction to Odontological prophylaxis.
- Psychological and ethical aspects in dental and medical treatment as well as priority issues in care.
- Ethics, communication and attitude in a multicultural society.
- The laws and regulations of healthcare.
- Scientific methodology, the program's scientific streak is presented and discussed, the meaning of a scientific approach.
- Caries and gingival inflammation as well as their aetiology.
- Relationships between microorganisms and inflammation and the link to general diseases
- Overview of laws and regulations within healthcare and dental care.
- Preventive dental care.
- Patient communication and ethics.
Teaching methods
Lectures, seminars, group work and library and IT usage.
For both modules, there is compulsory attendance at seminars and group exercises, as well as at the lecture on hygiene and disease control, patient education (objective 9, 10 and 11) and information search at the library .
The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.
Examination
Man and Society, 2 credits
Individual written assignment, essay and peer assessment (expected learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 are examined).
Introduction to Odontological Prophylaxis, 9,5 credits
Written individual examination (expected learning outcomes 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 are examined).
Written assignment and oral presentation (expected learning outcomes 15 is examined).
Oral presentation and critical review in seminar (expected learning outcomes 8, 10 are examined).
To pass the course, attendance at compulsory parts is also required.
Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.
Transitional provisions
If the course is discontinued or undergoes major changes, examination with the previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered for no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/discontinuation.
Other directives
The course evaluation will be carried out according to the guidelines established by the Board of Education.
