Fixed Prostodontics 3, 18 credits

For admission to semester 3, at least the Pass grade in all courses from semester 1 and at least 22.5 HE credits from semester 2, are required.

At the end of the course, you are expected to: Apply and analyse different methods to be able to recreate an aesthetic and bite-functional solid construction for the patient. Be able to account for clinical aspects concerning the effects of different materials and combinations of materials in crown and bridge therapy, with the patient in focus, and be able to read and analyse X-ray images with fixed prosthetic constructions Demonstrate an increased understanding of the work specific problems that may arise in cooperation with a dentist. On the basis of this, demonstrate an understanding of the importance of teamwork and cooperation with other professional groups, and demonstrate ability to promote and develop the communication in the dental care team by the application of communication theoretical aspects. Independently and in groups assess the quality of the fixed crown and bridging constructions included in the course. Be able to reflect on and discuss alternative working methods for solid structures.

The course comprises lectures, written assignments, seminars, demonstrations and a practical application. The course is divided into two parts Subpart 1 - Fixed prosthodontics - theory, 8 HE credits Fixed prosthodontics - theory Subpart 2 - Fixed prosthodontics - laboratory work, 10 HE credits Fixed prosthodontics - laboratory work Fixed prosthodontics - theory - Clinical retention aspects of the fixed replacement - Radiology - Ceramic replacement materials, an orientation - The work process in the development of titanium restorations - Bridging constructions and the design of the hanging joint considering; strength, function and aesthetics - Dental anatomy with a focus on aesthetics and occlusal physiology - Chromatology and staining - An orientation in implant treatment - Introduction to a collaborative exercise dental student/dental technician student - Auscultation in the pre-clinical preparation of the dental student - Communication with evaluation of preparation, design and integration with the dental education - Papers, assignments consisting of different parts with individual written and oral presentations - Demonstrations of practical parts of the course. Fixed prosthodontics - laboratory work The practical application, includes the production of; - Working methods for all the works in the course - inlays and full crowns, metal ceramics and all ceramics - reading, production of an all ceramic crown according to the CAD/CAM technique - soldering - temporary bridges - three-unit bridges - full crowns to dental students - self-assessment of practical work Function and aesthetics should be considered in the production of all designs.

The knowledge is provided in lectures, seminars, supervision, demonstrations and individual written assignments, papers with an oral presentation, and individual practical exercises with self-assessment.

Assessment of the students' achievements and knowledge acquisition takes place through approved individual written assignments with oral presentation, approved individually produced practical exercises and an approved practical test, and a written final examination. Requirement on attendance in a seminar following up all papers. In case of absence in a regular seminar session, the student should participate in a re-examination seminar to obtain a Pass grade. Attendance at demonstrations is also required. In case of absence in the demonstration, the student should hand in a written report on the contents of the demonstration. For a Pass grade in the written final examination, 65% correct answers is required. Limited number of examinations or practical training sessions If the student's examination is not approved, he/she gets 2 more attempts. After that, the student is recommended to retake the course and is given 3 more examination opportunities. If the student has not passed after 6 trials, he/she has no more admission to the course. If the course is closed down or undergoes major changes, examination under a previous literature list and learning outcomes will be offered no more than one academic year after the implementation of the revision/close-down.
