Objectives
Periodontology 1, 5 credits
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- Describe the theoretical principles when classifying periodontal disease.
- Give an account of tools for oral hygiene and methods for individually adapted self-care, from a scientific basis.
- Describe how tobacco can affect oral health, and hold a discussion about its consequences at group level.
- Describe empirically-based, non-surgical treatment and its importance for periodontal health.
- Describe the mineralisation, composition and structure of dental calculus and its impact on periodontal health.
- Describe various manual instruments used for mechanical treatment of infection and their applications.
- Explain the importance of an ergonomic working method.
- Explain the importance of maintaining an empathic and professional approach when talking to patients about oral health.
Cariology 1, 4.5 credits
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- Describe the aetiology, diagnosis and pathogenesis of caries disease on the basis of scientific research and evidence.
- Describe the aetiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of exposed root surfaces and root surface caries on the basis of scientific research and evidence.
- Describe the localisation and appearance of clinical caries damage and calculate a caries index.
- Independently construct individual preventative programmes for cariological treatment.
- Describe the impact of saliva on oral health and general well-being.
- Describe different fluoride preparations, their action mechanisms and toxic aspects, as well as recommendations in respect of fluoride supply.
- Describe the link between caries disease, exposed root surface, hypersensitivity and dental erosion in relation to general health and well-being.
- Describe caries prevalence and caries prevention from a global perspective, and reflect on ethical aspects at individual, group and community level.
Content
This course comprises two modules:
Periodontology 1, 5.0 hp
- Theoretical principles when classifying periodontal disease.
- Non-surgical periodontal treatment methods, plus planning, implementation and anticipated results of the same.
- Tools for oral hygiene.
- Communication between student and patient on the basis of and with regard to the patient's entire living environment.
- Ergonomic working method on the basis of the dental hygienist's work situation.
Cariology 1, 4.5 hp
- Aetiology of caries disease.
- Caries damage to the enamel, dentine and root cement.
- Caries index.
- Caries risk and caries prognosis.
- Caries therapy - causal treatment.
- Fluoride preparations.
- The exposed root surface, dental erosion and dental hypersensitivity.
- Oral health and general health.
Teaching methods
Periodontology 1, 5 credits
Lectures, group work and seminars.
Cariology 1, 4.5 credits
Lectures and individual exercises.
Seminars, group work and individual exercises are compulsory.
The course coordinator decides whether, and if so how, absence from compulsory course elements can be made up. Study results cannot be reported until the student has participated in compulsory course elements or compensated for any absence in accordance with instructions from the course coordinator. Absence from a compulsory course element could mean that the student can not retake the element until the next time the course is offered.
Examination
Periodontology 1, 5 credits
Written examination, written group assignment, plus oral presentation in seminars.
Cariology 1, 4.5 credits
Written examination.
Attendance of compulsory course elements is also required in order to pass the course.
To receive a grade of Pass with distinction for the whole course, a Pass with distinction is required for the Periodontology 1 and Cariology 1 modules.
Students who do not pass a regular examination are entitled to re-sit the examination on five more occasions. If the student has failed six examinations/tests, no additional examination is given. Each occasion the student participates in the same test counts as an examination. Submission of a blank exam paper is regarded as an examination. In case a student is registered for an examination but does not attend, this is not regarded as an examination.
If there are special grounds, or a need for adaptation for a student with a disability, the examiner may decide to deviate from the syllabus's regulations on the examination form, the number of examination opportunities, the possibility of supplementation or exemptions from the compulsory section/s of the course etc. Content and learning outcomes as well as the level of expected skills, knowledge and abilities may not be changed, removed or reduced.
Transitional provisions
If the course is discontinued or undergoes major changes, examination opportunities will be offered according to a previous list of references and intended learning outcomes for a maximum of one academic year after the implementation of the revision/discontinuation.
